LAKE MARY, Fla. — A robber threatened his victim with a bottle of gasoline and a lighter, only to find out the store's owner was packing even more firepower, authorities said Friday.
The incident happened Friday at an Internet café in Lake Mary.
According to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, the robber pulled out a water bottle that contained gasoline, threw gas on the store owner and then pulled out a lighter to demand money.
"He obviously gave the clerk the impression he was going to be set on fire," said Lt. James Clark.
Investigators said that's when the owner, Hassan Malih, pulled out his gun and fired at the robber. The robber fled, authorities said.

Don’t bring a gas can to a gun fight.
Well I would have fired my gun until the magazine was empty or the perp was dead or out of my sight.
It is fairly common for people in gun fights to not know how many shots they have fired.
This reminds me of the old adage that Smith and Wesson beats four aces...

I would have thought the gunshot would have ignited the fumes from the gas that had been thrown on the clerk.
Probably had gasoline in his eyes.
Mythbusters a few episodes ago did something similar. They filled a little box with natural gas and tried to ignite it with a gunshot - didn’t work. Evidently the muzzle flash moves too fast to provide enough heat for ignition.

That idea was pretty well disproven on Mythbusters. I know some here have a problem with that show but for this one I can’t really challenge their methodology.
I am aware of that fact.
The intended point was that if you emptied the magazine you would know how many shots you had fired.
When the slide locks back you've emptied the mag, so one should know. If the slide doesn't lock back, count the unfired rounds and subtract.
More likely the fuel / air mixture was not within it’s explosive limits.

I read something about this years ago...
During the Japanese invasion of the Phillippines a group of cut off GIs tried to start a fire for warmth one night. They soaked a blanket in gasoline and fired a shot into it. The gas would not light no matter how many times they shot into it. They had no matches.
A while back there was a case of someone trying to rob a convenience store with a palm frond. They threatened to poke the clerk.
The correct procedure to start a fire with a gun is this:
Take one of the cartridges from the gun and pull the bullet from the cartridge. Empty about 2/3 of the powder from the cartridge. Take a small strip of dry cloth or tissue and rub some of the emptied gunpowder into it. It must be small enough to fit back into the cartridge. Place the gunpowder rubbed cloth or tissue into the cartridge. Have your fire and tinder ready. Fire the firemaker round into the ground near the tinder ready fire. With a little luck, the cloth or tissue will be smoldering or will have burst into flames. You may have to experiment a bit to determine exact the the best amount of gunpowder to leave in the cartridge to ignite the wadding and force it out of the barrel without extinguishing it.

Thats no way to make fronds.
