N. Korean soldiers leave barracks en masse looking for food

An increasing number of North Korean soldiers are showing “AWOL” behaviors to avoid intense physical training and look for food, the local daily, Chosun Ilbo, said Saturday, sourcing it to RFA.

AWOL is a military acronym for "absence without leave."

“It’s hard to punish them because there are too many of such soldiers,” an unnamed North Korean informant, told RFA in the report.

Some of the soldiers display “on-off’ AWOL behaviors, for example, leaving the barracks in the morning looking for food and coming back in the evening.

“The en masse absence is even causing difficulty in carrying out training according to schedule,” the source said.

The sorry state of the military even earned Kim Jong-un’s ire, who reportedly said: “Those incapable military commanders should resign.”

The informant, introduced in the report as a soldier, put the low morale in the North Korean military this way. “If there were 10 AWOL reports, the actual number would be about 50.”

It is really telling to look at your average North Korean Soldier and your average South Korean..

Same genetics pool (one Generation removed) same *type* of diet and yet the Avg North Korean is at least 6 inches shorter than the average North Korean..

If we had a president with some guts, he’d offer all the steak they can eat to the North Korean army if they turn on the dictatorship

This has already been done and it didn't work. The US, South Korea and China give the North food in exchange for non-compliance on most issues. GHB, GWB, Clinton and most likely Obama will play this game. Every third world nation that wants the bomb is playing this game and the US is losing. Our leaders can't seem to figure out how the world has worked in the last twenty years.

No food to the NK government - only steak to the army if they overthrow the government (and rice to the rest of the country).

North Korea’s system is unsustainable and coming apart fast, which leads to the million dollar question: what are they willing to do in their desperation?

They want to keep the DMZ wall up now more than ever

If NK regime collapses and SK take over political and military control of NK, DMZ will still stay, while NK will gradually "grow out of" slow motion massacre inflicted upon them by Kim Jong-il. The lasting legacy of Kim Jong-il. It will haunt Korea for a long time, and serve as a black mark on NK sympathizers. They will remain walking proofs for decades.

This is a great time to send more helium balloons loaded with food care packages to the NorKs. What would be really cool is to have an rc helium dirigible with autopilot software.

It’s mission would be to carry a decent payload of canisters loaded with food attached to parachutes, fly near those military bases, drop the food and fly back home. Reload it and send it back out again.

Think of it like the Korean version of the Marshall Plan.

Lil’ Kim would be furious, apoplectic and have a conniption fit beyond measure! LOL!

Is it because of another unexpected bad harvest and traumatic weather pattern that mysteriously seems to affect only the countries that utilize collective farming and central planning?

Actually, there are a few dedicated groups of balloon launchers in SK. They launch hundreds of fliers at a time. In addition to fliers, some balloons also carry ramens, a little bag of rice(100gram,) and a dollar bill.

on some days with favorable wind, they are said to reach deep inside NK all the way to the area just to the south of Pyongyang or part of Hamkyong Province.

Many of these items are apparently raining down on areas in the North not far from DMZ.

I have friends who emigrated from South Korea. He’s about 5’6”, she’s a bit shorter. Their daughter, born here is 6’2” tall, and stunningly gorgeous! If I was younger,,,,,,,

Maybe this is disinformation...

That's my first reaction. Is anyone familiar with KOREA TIMES?

All I know is that there sure are a lot of "famines" in NK. Same with Zimbabwe.

How can we financially help these groups? Does anyone know of an legitimate organization where we can send donations to that will help fund the balloon care package flights?

Wow, are the Norks using 12 years for soldiers now.
It's hard to believe that NK soldier is an adult.

It’s 85% humor but perhaps SK should invest in MRE-firing arty to stop an invasion in its tracks.

Let the wall fall on the other side. This is China’s mess & they ought to clean it up.

The unraveling continues, it seems.

Pro-liberation anti-Kim clique black ops based clandestine broadcasts, cell phone usage to spread the word (even use the damned DPRKs own Koryolink if one has to, through various methods) balloons with flyers, underground printing presses, text messages, word of mouth rumor campaigns, shortwave broadcasts any and all kinds of couriers, should kick off and ramp up defection/disloyalty enticement programs promising food (and gold bollioun if they bring over various weaponry or sabotage property of the current Kim Dynasty/KWP elite leadership such as Junior Kim's train carrying provisions in the Northern Region), on a tiered level, to soldiers and officers of the KPA in these areas. At the same time, powerful imagery along with motivating text re: Kim Jong il and Kim Jong Un has been fat and stuffed to the gills (which they are) should accompany such enticement programs to create hatred and enmity towards the Kim Inner Circle. An army travels on its stomach. The DPRK has a VERY SOFT UNDERBELLY in this regard, this is becoming a real achilles heel that, under a normal American President committed to ridding the world of this menace and helping liberate its people, could be exploited to the max.

Mayby this is dis-informantion, make us believe things are really bad in the North, trying to goad the South into an attack against what may be really well trained and fed troops.

I expect the NK's to have this sort of paranoia but I doubt anyone seriously plans to invade. There's nothing there that anyone (including South Korea) wants.

Worst Case: A few surgical sorties, a few well-placed MOABs, will be the extent of the campaign against NK. After that, the west can leave the Norks to their own devices for a few decades.

"even earned Kim Jong-un’s ire, who reportedly said: “Those incapable military commanders should resign"

This will begin to mark the downfall of the Boy, before he even had a chance to rise. Resentment toward these most arrogrant, elitist Pyongyang-based comments by K.J.U., the "Youth Captain" SHOULD BE EXPLOITED within disatissfied sectors of the Korean Peoples Army, from the grassroots up, from squad units to sections to platoons to companies to batallions to division to regiment to Corps levels. The former titles bestowed upon him which did not make him high enough in DPRK military rank upon the Party's reflection, should be used tongue in cheek and against all recent orders prohibiting the further use of such previous titles, such as the "Young General", or the "Youth Captain."
