Blackbirds falling in the dead of night:Investigation under way after 1,000 tumble from Arkansas sky

Bemused U.S. officials are looking into why more than 1,000 blackbirds crashed from the sky in Arkansas on the final day of 2010.

In scenes reminiscent of the FlashForward drama series, state wildlife employees were searching the town of Beebe after scores of birds fell to the ground late on New Year's Eve, continuing into the early hours of the morning.

High winds and tornadoes swept through Arkansas on New Year's Eve, killing seven people, and state staff believe the bizarre incident could be down to the severe conditions.

In the hit BBC thriller series Flash Forward (pictured) crows fell from the sky, in a spooky incident which mirrored that at Mrs Knight's Somerset house on Sunday

Just heard on the news that there’s been a bunch of fish found dead in a river in Arkansas. I thinking it’s bibical and the state of Arkansas is being punished for the “Sins of Bubba” (SOB)...””

LOL! Is this an original?

Nothing like likening the event to a plot element in an unwatched and cancelled sci-fi series.

Yeah, totally like that show .... what was it called again?

Too bad the show got cancelled or maybe we’d know what caused it.

Apparently the red-winged black bird is not rare and 3,000 dead birds out of a flock of millions would have been a partial, but not total flock kill. Probably weather related:

http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Red-winged_Blackbird/lifehistory

Winter flocks can be congregations of several million birds, including other blackbird species and starlings. Each morning the roosts spread out, traveling as far as 50 miles to feed, then re-forming at night.

I was guessing a sudden cold snap would do this -
it’s what caused a massive fish kill in Fla a year ago.

"Early this morning, a bird flew into the area where the lights were hovering last night. It stopped dead in the air and fell straight down. They caught it on tape. They've been playing it all morning. The footage looks like the bird flew into a wall in the sky. They found the bird. His... his head was crushed in. They think they have some kind of invisible-shield thing going, l-like an optical illusion. They're still there, hovering......."

The birds that died would have been the weakest members of the flock. i.e. If the flock numbered 50,000 and only 1,000 were lost to ice, hail, or lightening - that would be a very small percentage.

Somewhere, the remaining birds are flying around - eating and roosting prn. It would be important to find the flock to determine the exact cause of the dead drop-outs.

It was when Emily was driving out of town, and she came upon a section of road that was covered in dead blackbirds. She gets out of her car and walks among them. I think it was right after the blast.
