You can always use sub-sonic rounds at close range.

Note from SC: It’s a great way to shoot the armadillo tearing up your yard ... at 3 am ... in a senior, gated community. Everybody stays asleep, armadillo gone, yard looks good in the morning.
In Europe, they encourage use of suppressors to mitigate noise pollution.
I thought the feds prohibited silencers....?
Am I thinking of something else?
Why do you want a silencer...?
They have these things called ear plugs that work just fine.
For later
You can legally own a suppressor(”silencer”). You have to pay a few hundred dollars for a federal ‘tax stamp’, and submit to a thorough federal background check. I believe a leading member of your local law enforcement has to sign off on it too. (I’m not entirely clear on this part) Assuming if you pass the background check, if your local sheriff or DA won’t sign for you, the state police will.
In case of home invasion,I won’t have time to put in ear plugs.I’ve already mounted the suppressor on the MP5.
I don’t think its illegal to own a plastic 2 liter bottle filled with sponge taped to the end of a revolver. Works for me.
There is an oft-told tale about a clock tower in a small town that began tolling thirteen times at midnight. Officials inspected the strike mechanism to no avail. Then by chance one night, a cop saw a window open in a nearby house, a .22 rifle with a homemade silencer protruded, and as the clock struck twelve o’clock, the rifle spat and added a thirteenth strike.
An arrest quickly followed.
FYI.
I think the sheriff is the one that has to sign off. I haven’t ever heard of the state police angle. But I haven’t applied for a silencer either.
I can’t see any possible reason to want a silence for home defense. In fact, I can think of several reasons why it would do more harm than good. Not alerting your neighbors tops the list.
I think I’m going to have to put this in the ‘tacticool’ category, along with all the people who think that an AR-15 is an excellent home defense weapon.
Well, for one thing-the invaders won’t know that they are being taken out.I also get to retain my hearing during the fight, important for detecting new threats. An ar-15 might not be the best home defense weapon, but it would beat throwing chairs.
An AR15 sure beats fingernails
I don’t own a silencer, but I can think of several home defense advantages: 1. My hearing is not impaired from my gun shot. 2. Someone invading my home will have a hard time locating my position. 3. Neighbors are not disturbed while I take out the perp. This is important in that it will give me ample time to clean up the battlefield before the police arrive—”if you get my meanin”. This becoming less important as the ruling elite slowly loosens self-defense restrictions. But then, again, I think it’s important to eliminate any ambiguity about the situation. Sadly, there remain far too many over zealous prosecutors—and policemen/women.
Lawful ownership requires a Class 3 permit, as I recall.
