Destroying the Credibility of Science
Canada Free Press ^ | 1/6/2011 | Alan Caruba

Global warming, Vaccines v. Autism, DDT, Saccharine, Alar . . .

Aside from the fact that these claims always begin with a dubious “scientific” study and then escalate as other “scientists” climb on the funding bandwagon, the other element is always the role that the mainstream media plays in keeping the fraud alive until the sheer weight of evidence makes it impossible to do so.

Ultimately, this destroys the trust we normally accord to legitimate scientists, exhausting our ability and willingness to embrace the science that has prolonged and protected the lives of millions.

KEYWORDS: autism; climatechange; ddt; science
Andrew Wakefield, the "scientist" who claimed that autism was caused by vaccines, originally falsified his "research" because he was paid to do so by a firm of trial lawyers who wanted to use the study as a basis for a class action suit against the vaccine makers.

It took a journalist, Brian Deer, to do the necessary due diligence to prove that the autism v. vaccines study was fraudulent.

Read State of Fear by the late Michael Crichton. Distills this mentality perfectly.

Most of the "Global Warming" scientists will have to become "street walkers" for a couple of years, just to get their respectability back...

I wouldn’t put the Autism/Vaccine thing in the same league as Global Warming.

Global Warming has the fraudulent support of the entire grant-endowing educational complex. You don’t get grant money without worshiping the false god of AGW.

The Autism/Vaccine fraud is a much lesser affair.

AGW is global warfare against human liberty and economic prosperity conducted by a vast establishment of communist revolutionaries in scientific/environmentalist garb.

The Autism/Vaccine fraud is a simple criminal justice violation.

The media also runs sensasionalist headlines.

“Earthlike planet” is one of my personal pet peeves. When you read the stories you seldom find the actual astronomers using the term and if they do they clarify it to mean a pretty wide range of unihabitable conditions. Everything from mercury to mars is “earthlike” in scientific terms.

While I would agree that the autism study doesn’t have the global consequences that the climate change bosh does, it is all of a piece. The financial and health consequences of all of the studies cited in the article, and later proved to be false, have the same thing in common . . . the scientific community validating each other. I don’t know how the other claims were debunked, but the global warming crappola was undone by stolen emails and the autism study was unraveled by a determined journalist over a 6 year period. The “scientific” community has undermined its credibility and proven that it is both unable and unwilling to police itself.

Ayn Rand addressed the comingling of science and government in "Atlas Shrugged." When you put scientists in a position where they're entirely dependent on public dollars, they start tailoring their "research" to produce outcomes which are desired by their clients' political needs.

There's no such thing as a free lunch; i.e., government research grants, and in this case, science and the truth suffer.

I spent way too many years working at a “research” university. Professors who attract grants are considered gods on campus. They can hire their friends to help with “research”. They get excused from teaching responsibilities - part of the grant always calls for a buyout of the professor’s time, and possibly a large portion of other staff time. Federal government grants are a form of grand theft. They are administered by ignorant bureaucratic hacks who only care that the grant paperwork is submitted on time.

At least the private foundations sic serious paid monitors on the recipients of any sizable grants they endow.

I went to Syracuse University for my undergrad engineering degree. In the past few years, the college of engineering magazine became an absolute obscene PC joke.

What was once a great magazine that highlighted real achievements in engineering, research, and science became a leftist propaganda sheet for "global warming", "family planning", and "equal rights".

By advocating for such shit as “man caused global warming”, mankind came from monkeys, apes, and chimpanzes, and “environmentalism” science has destroyed its credibility by itself. No other help was necessary.

I would say that evolution is the earliest example of "science" being pushed for ulterior motives. As science, it is quite dubious -- but as a method of social engineering, it is an excellent tool.

Real science won't become the norm again and scientists admit that evolution is a religion.

Just as the abuses by the medieval Church (pogroms, indulgences, apostatic popes) eventually eroded that institution’s power as a moral force, so will the abuses by prostitute “scientists” eventually destroy that secular god. That is the root of much post-modern angst: there’s NOTHING left to believe in. Or so the boo hoo crowd would have you believe ...

That was my first thought when I heard that 'credibility of science' rubbish.
