Obama Eyeing Internet ID for Americans
CBS News | CNet ^ | 1/7/10 | Declan McCullagh

STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.

It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

“I suspect that the internet ID was part of the “Financial Reform” bill.” Or maybe the healthcare bill?

Liberals are trying to squash our speech rights - make us afraid to give our opinions. They walk around in their PC splendor mouthing ideas like we’d quit speaking if people knew who we were - they are wrong.

Many won't quit, but many will. Culling the herd is what it's all about. They simply don't want to be overwhelmed when they cherry-pick their targets. Middle-of-the-night knocks on the door is how this ramps up.

Freepers are maybe what, 1-2% of those on the right? In terms of movers and shakers, I would grant, it's probably more like 80%, with maybe 75% of such movers and shakers having a Freeper on their staffs.

You're right - they'll keep upping the pressure ( as much as they can get away with) - totalitarians are sooooo predictable...

Has this Q been asked already on this thread? (Do we have to show birth records to get our “Internet ID” from Obama’s bureaucratic extension?)

As with other bad laws and policies, Republicans would refuse to repeal. Think about the favored, bipartisan constituents.

Most current Internet subscribers would simply get off the Net and go nonpolitical. That, coupled with the contemporary boycott against the economy would result in new leadership from third political parties within a short time. Democrats and Republicans would be out.

Who are they kidding - this stuff already exists in the private sector!

Yup. It's called "OpenID". The problem with this for the Obama Administration and their statist followers, is that it is not a government controlled project.

You may be able to beat the beast using Virtual Machine technology. I haven’t looked into it closely, but perhaps using NAT to connect a VM to the network may hide you pretty well.

Nope. Your VM will still have to ultimately go out the MAC of the physical hardware.

Of course, there are plenty of tools to allow you to spoof MAC addresses all day long. Hell, on my linux boxes, I can specify my MAC on my wireless card by entering an iwconfig command.

The only people this kind of thing will nail will be the lazy, and your average Joe.

BTW, I mentioned OpenID in an earlier post. It would appear that if you have logins to any of the following, then you already have an OpenID account ... Google, Yahoo, LiveJournal, Hyves, Blogger, Flickr, Orange, Mixi, myspace, Wordpress, AOL, chi.mp, claimID, myid.net, myopenid, versign labs, .yiid.

Sounds dangerous to me.

“Saudi Arabia bans blogging without a licence”

“Freedom of speech organizations are condemning a decision by the Saudi Arabian government to force all online newspapers and bloggers to register with the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Under the new rules, to be introduced next month, all online writers - and this appears to include forums and even short messaging - will need a license, valid for up to three years.

The Saudi government says the move is simply designed to protect society - and points out that it was already censoring content anyway. Saudi Arabia has one of the highest numbers of bloggers in the Arabic world.

Applicants for a licence need to be Saudi, at least 20 years old and to have graduated from high school. They will also need ‘documents testifying to their good behavior’. Editors of online newspapers will need to be approved by the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Anyone caught blogging without a licence will be subject to a fine of up to 100,000 Riyal ($26,665), and/or a ban - possibly forever...”

No, not really. I got the idea back in the 1980s from a game called Paranoia.

Sadly, a lot of that game’s parodies have become reality now.

Why not ID evryone who reads a newspaper, watches news on TV or listens to the radio while they're at it.

I'll bet there are plans in store that will have all new televisions to run a live feed of the audiences as well as to activate all webcams for the same purpose. "1984" has finally arrived. Thought crime is next and I read yesterday that a new computer controller has been invented that runs off of brain waves but it wouldn't surprise me to discover that it won't work on liberals.
