"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

[To: paulycy]

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

We’ve become a circular firing squad, and have already killed off 80% of our own people.
"everyone I knew basically left because of so much childish, immature personal attacks. The propensity there to eat their own..." --Sean Hannity
I agree with you. You can't keep eliminating people and attacking your own ... otherwise, no one is left to fund the site. That being said, I would encourage for Free Republic to display a top banner ad like Drudge has, but, of course, in order to get the high-paying advertiser, you'd have to have a site that's up nearly 100% of the time.

Sometimes change is good, though. Maybe Free Republic needs a change or two regarding the mechanics of this site. And maybe (through this thread; thanks paulycy) there's a FReeper that will be found that can help.

Really? Silly?

Yea vag, the purges were really silly. And counter-productive to boot. They did offer a few sick individuals like you the opportunity to indulge in your thuggish ways. But as long as we are exploring new and innovative ways to generate operating funds perhaps management should consider auctions.

For example, I would be willing to ante in $50 to kick your sorry azz to the curb. I bet there would be plenty of others that would love to weigh in on the action as well. We could add some cushion to the coffers and clean up the joint at the same time!

Neat idea, eh?!

I have no personal brass. *ahem*

But I nixed the idea of his church as there's no bassoons either.

Wow. A) you don’t know Elsie B) He is not a cow, C) he has never shown any propensity to violence, D) you forgot to ping him and E) your post shows exactly where the ‘hate’ comes from and it isn’t from the ‘antis’.

Then if they didn't like to see the banners, they could donate.

Should be a simple software check: If you're a donee; then no banners for you!

Sure, like many of your post, some I agree with, some I don’t, but I am not gonna be the one to tell you you are wrong in your beliefs, thats just not right.Nothing wrong with bringing up alternative ideas, but not to try and brow beat someone into submission.

All this hate speech leads to violence! We need to stop it here and now. Who cares about the first amendment anywho!!!

And religion, who needs it? Do away with it! Wait, that sounds like an atheist, or liberal or democrat! ;)

Why do people always want to silence religion? If you don't like a certain area, DON'T GO THERE!

IBM’s DB/2 has many price points and can be purchased VERY competitively for a single server license and then grow across servers as finances and demand permit. It is an excellent fast, reliable and very cost effective product.

Goos to see that you're a staunch and loyal supporter of FR. But since you're a relative newbie, I want to make sure you understand that we FReepers OURSELVES are responsible for the reputation of this site and the face we put forward to the public and the ONE MILLION PAGE HITS PER DAY we generate.

My suggestion is that, while we like to have fun, it should still be decent and professional ESPECIALLY when we have guests the stature of an active Conservative leader like Duncan Hunter. Don't we want more access to actual players like him? I think we do.

We won't get them with rickety technology and shockingly poor behavior.

I love and support FR. But surely we must keep our house in order, too. Adults must take care that things are kept in shape around here so that we can continue to have fun, be informed and have a continuing powerful influence on this Republic of ours.

Capiche?

;-)

There is no inquisition going on, just a defense of the faith.

I’m surprised at how many freepers are against free speech.

I don’t know how they could enforce the mandatory search.

With the keywords, they could just make it a mandatory field, to put in at least two keywords.

People ought to be able to think up that many. Usually the name of the city works. Or the person involved. Or something relating to the topic.

As for the blog pimps, I’d be in favor of someone going through the bloggers and personal forum and looking at the posting history of those posting and if they never or rarely post replies to their thread, just delete them all and free up storage space in the computers. I don’t know how much that would actually accomplish, if it would be worth it, but it just really annoys me to see some people just using FR thinking that they’re going to get hits on their blogs because they posted here.

There are also blogpimps who use their FR homepage to advertise their blogs. That could go as well.

Like this one. Multiple threads a day all linked to its site, very few comments on them in the form of replies.

http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/by:blogeyeblasttv/index?tab=articles

This is the sort of thing I’d LOVE to see go or that should be charged for staying. Enough of using FR as FRee advertising.
