Absolutely -- both on right and left. Political adversaries are commonly reduced to evil charicatures; enemies who must be defeated by any means. It is not going too far to say that the tone these days tends toward outright political hatred.
In itself, the political hatred is probably not going to cause murders. But couple it with some whackjob with anger management issues, and you've got trouble.
The media are complicit in this. They pander to controversy, and they pay much more attention to shrillness and sensationalism, than to sober and reasoned discussion and debate. They fan the flames, because it makes for better entertainment.
And the people in the middle have simply tuned it all out. It's too loud, and too unpleasant.
This kid was just a disturbed whack job. In a free society sometimes a bad thing happens. Its just the way it is.
