The Saudi brand of Islam is our biggest threat. China can be our ally against this.

That’s not a correct statement of *my* beliefs, although it may apply to some.

I'll take your word on that. But it does appear that way to me.

Where are you from, FRiend? Your comments indicate to me that you’re not American and your homepage offers no clue.

Actually, I am an American. I simply have never appreciated the anti-China rhetoric on the FR.

>> How are we hurt of China takes over politically?

Taiwan is a representative democratic republic; China is a totalitarian Marxist dictatorship. For me that answers the question completely, but philosophically YMMV.

I sense that we are not in agreement about the worth of defending and spreading freedom in the world. I think you are more of a pragmatic isolationist. If so, I don’t agree with you but neither do I think your position is foolish or indefensible.

Why don’t we just agree to disagree? I have to get back to work anyway.

FRegards

Similarly, I have never appreciated the “China is our friend, China is fundamentally good, China can do no wrong” rhetoric anywhere.

At its core China is a communist dictatorship that exercises hegemony the likes of which America has never even considered. She plans to someday bring the entire world under totalitarian Chinese communist rule. I can’t live with that and I sure don’t wish that on future generations.

FRegards

Thanks; to have work, especially these days, is a blessing from God and I’m grateful for it.

I hope you do also; if not, I pray you will soon.

Similarly, I have never appreciated the “China is our friend,

It started out that way (as friendly after the Nixon visit and while the former USSR still loomed), but due to the resentment of China's rise on America's part, I would have to agree that China isn't our friend.

China is fundamentally good,

Depends on what you define as good.

China can do no wrong” rhetoric anywhere.

I've never said or implied that. Even those who promote better US-China relations (including myself) believe there are improvements that China needs to make in order for better US-China relations to continue.

However, I am against demonizing China for every and anything where she shows progress. Whether that be sending a man into orbit or negotiating with South American countries for their natural resources. I find it appalling that many Americans think nothing of much smaller countries, such as Britain and France (and I do mean much much smaller) having unfettered access to the globe whereas China is demonized merely for doing something other European powers do, whether it be buying oil from the Arabs, negotiating with Africa for resources, etc. And even inviting auto manufacturers into their country. The list is huge of those acts that other countries do, in particular, Britain and France, is seen as an everyday business is demonized when China does them.

At its core China is a communist dictatorship that exercises hegemony the likes of which America has never even considered. She plans to someday bring the entire world under totalitarian Chinese communist rule. I can’t live with that and I sure don’t wish that on future generations.

I believe China wants to remain a one party rule. China, while still calling herself a communist country, in effect is actually evolving into an oligarchy. But a very large oligarchy, one with 70 million members. Many of the European nations in the 1800's were not communist countries but were a very centralize oligarchy with the royal family ruling. But practiced free market. Many countries in this world, today, are oligarchies such as Saudi Arabia (ruled by the Royal family). And guess what? We sell ALOT of military hardware to them.

I firmly believe you won't have to live under Chinese communist rule if China is allowed to grow unfettered. I believe that. What you may have to live with, though, is a China that may someday have more economic might than the US. And even greater political influence across the globe. And that is to be expected as China with 1.4 billion people (vs 300 million for the US) wants to become a developed nation.

Personally, I believe the illegal invasion from Central and South America to be our biggest threat. However, in choosing between the Jihadists and China, I think they are about equal. The Jihadists are a larger threat short term while China is more of a long term threat. And, I believe they are more likely to join against us than we are to join with China against the Jihadists.

I think whether we defend Taiwan depends upon how the war develops.

If China does some kind of a sneak attack a la Pearl Harbor, for example by ambushing US ships or shooting missiles at US bases or Guam, I think we will fight. It also depends on what Taiwan does. If Taiwan resists strongly and commits a lot of its own blood to the fight, I think the chances of us defending them go up a lot. It also depends how the war is marketed. If pictures come out of Taiwan of missiles killing civilians, the chance of our intervention go up.

Also, in the event we did not defend Taiwan, I think Japan would probably take note of that and care for their own defense, including going nuclear.

China is certainly arming like they intend to go to war with us, and not in a small way. They are arming like they want to go toe to toe with us and BEAT us, humiliate us and degrade us to a second rate power. I think their goal goes beyond taking Taiwan.

Sad to say they have already taken away our manufacturing base, with our own cooperation.

It’s strange that they have made an issue of those stupid little Senkaku islands now, and are reportedly crossing the border into India in the Aksai Chin. If they did things a little bit more quietly they could probably get everything they want and then some.

However, they seem to have a need to rub everyone else’s noses in it.

Let’s say tomorrow Taiwan’s government called us and said they had made a decision to sell out to China, and that we should not interfere, thank you. Let’s say they even did a referendum that somehow passed with 51%+. I feel that the Chinese, post-takeover, would still do things to the local Taiwanese (or whatever they want to call themselves) that would make doing this a bitter pill.

At this point, my personal dreams for America are the following:
In 2100, I hope
1. America, with a population of ~600 million (vs ~800 million for China at the time) is one of the wealthiest countries on earth, has a small government founded on constitutional principles, and is not a radioactive wasteland. We have not been defeated in a major war in the 21st century.
2. It continues to be the land of opportunity and innovation.
3. Our private companies have been leaders in space colonization, which is not done by an “international authority”
4. Our government, and our people personally, have low debt relative to the size of their economy and finances; the demographic retirement crisis of the 21st century was solved after much pain.
5. Our military is the most feared and capable fighting force in the world, possessing the best weapons and training.
