More than 1,000 young American women have been raped or sexually assaulted in the last decade while serving as Peace Corps volunteers in foreign countries, an ABC News 20/20 investigation has found. In some cases, victims say, the Peace Corps has ignored safety concerns and later tried to blame the women who were raped for bringing on the attacks. "I have two daughters now and I would never ever let them join the Peace Corps," said Adrianna Ault Nolan of New York, who was raped while serving in Haiti.
In the most brutal attack, Jess Smochek, 29, of Pennsylvania was gang raped in Bangladesh in 2004 by a group of young men after she says Peace Corps officials in the country ignored her pleas to re-locate her.
"They slammed me against the wall and just started threatening me, they're calling me a filthy American whore," she said. "'We told you to stop going to the police. And now we have to kill you,'" she said. "I was in so much pain that I just told them, 'Just kill me. Please. Just do it.'" Smochek was left unconscious in a back alley.

I think the number quoted may be too low.
The only Peace Corps this country should have is the Peace Corps of the United States Marines. Peace through overwhelming superior firepower.
A friend of mine went to Haiti with a church group when he was in High School. They were supposed to help build a church. The first night they were there a group of Haitians armed with machetes came into the church where they were staying and took everything they had.
Would it be wrong of me to suggest that the perps might, possibly, be of the mohammedan persuasion?
Doesn’t our Dear Leader want all of our graduating high school seniors to do a tour in similar service projects around the world?

These college girls are continually told how America sucks and to admire the turd world. Their parents usually did them a disservice too. Its very vogue now to work among the savages. Unfortunately, the savages follow no PC campus rules.

Most of the world treats women as property.
Sending ones daughters to a third world country is the same as sending them into a house full of drunken frat boys on Viagra.
There is no idiocy on earth which cannot be easily surpassed by government oversight.
People are in the government because they perceive that they cannot even come close to competing in the civilian world.
And the “Peace Corpse” (misspelling intended) is a prime example of a collection of incompetent (mostly liberal) noer-do-wells who couldn’t cook a hamburger.

To a lesser degree, you see this when you back someone into the rhetorical corner and they’d rather tell you that Mother Theresa is no better than Adolph Hitler
than they would give up their post-modern worldview.
When an American is faced with jail or execution in a third world country, a good many Americans jump to the conclusion he is innocent, or at any rate won’t get a fair trial.
Which he probably won’t, by American standards. Most Peace Corps volunteers are upper middle class kids. The bureaucrats and media identify with them a lot more than some faceless third world victim.
What is different in this case is that the victim was also an American.
What an appalling story.
Just the mere fact of being a woman makes them vulnerable for sexual attacks. Be a lot safer for them to stay close to home and out of foreign countries...IMO

Yes, seriously the Peace Corps is a waste of money and it produces a largely negative effect. The very nature of the program is an insult to the host nation; “We know you have a labor surplus but we’re sending some high-minded college grads over to roll up their sleves and show you how its done.”
