Er... there's actually an exception to this. It's called a "split" shell. If I post info here, admins will just yank it. I'll e-mail it to you though. :-)
To: hiredhand
we discussed the 'split' shell before, still sounds 'iffy' for defense loadings unless you got reeeeaaaaly good at it...
and no way would i post it here, as i believe you are correct in that the post would be short lived...
#4 is prolly as heavy as i'd go anyways, with the way the house is laid out...beyond that, Im fightin towards a rifle and LOTS more renovating of the ole farmhouse...8^}

Kel-tec makes some creative firearms but they REALLY needs to work on their overall craftsmanship since their stuff tends to look very dingy.
On the other hand this shotgun looks like it may be the next hot thing if a) they make it in a semi-auto and b) improve on the feed mechanisms since it looks like its tough to feed rounds between the tube barrels.

Here are a couple of charts that make the size thing clearer:
Another factor is the number of pellets(rounds) in each shot shell.
Then there is pattern dispersion at
x feet out from the muzzle.
Othe factors for consideration involve energy transfer (determined by velocity and pellet(round) weight(mass), shot pattern at anticipated distance and target cover (clothing, walls, windows, car-door, etc).
Even a .410 loaded with the appropriate shell is a devastating tool.

Good info. And I agree with your comment:
"Even a .410 loaded with the appropriate shell is a devastating tool."
My first gun as a single-shotter .410.
But there is a school of thought that a 12 gauge with 00 buck or slugs is the sine qua non of home defense. But based on many factors, I think No. 4 buck is a better load, and that for home defense 20 gauge is better than 12. Lastly, I "love" that bullpup configuration for home defense. Much more maneuverable in the "tight confines" of a home situation.

“Pardon me folks but just what does this have over a Saiga 12 which is semi-auto with choice of 5,10,20 rd feeds? Ya, it looks cooler than a stock Saiga but I just dont get the excitement.”
What, are you kiddin? Even as the owner of a Saiga12 (which I love), I need a cigarette after looking at this new shottie.
In fact the Saiga has me rather spoiled, but perhaps I could handle this new KelTec with its stock into my shoulder and forward vertical grip to pump.
