Hawaii - NIMBY Alert !
Awakened once again by the roaring of Air Force C-17 maneuvers just down the hill at Kona International Airport, I am prompted to write. I'm want to launch a community discussion on the increased military use of our airport and the appalling sound pollution caused by aircraft maneuvers.
It has been determined, by the Air Force and state that Kona International Airport is ideal for such purposes and increased military use is planned. As I see it Kona is at a critical crossroads in determining the future of our quality of life and livelihood.

In late July 1989, I was jogging along the road in Myrtle Beach near the AFB. While I was huffing/puffing, a flight of A-10s took off and roared by. Great sight to this old zoomie. Then Saddam invaded Kuwait and three days after I saw them, the entire squadron had deployed to Saudi Arabia.
Barbra Streisand rented the home of Dr. Gene and Beth Grace (509 North Street, Downtown Beaufort; private residence) during the filming. She had a privacy screen erected around the house (which had a swimming pool) and added personal touches to the interior (bathroom carpeting, for example).

Director Barbra Streisand did not enjoy as “harmonious” a relationship with the Marine Corps Air Station (Main Gate at the intersection of U. S. Highway 21 and SC 116). as Lewis John Carlino, the director of The Great Santini. Frustrated by the noise from military jets flying over the areas in which she was filming, Ms. Streisand phoned the base commanding officer to request a halt in flights. She was not pleased when the colonel did not grant her request.
The Prince of Tides was filmed in 1990 in Beaufort; the Gulf War was in 1991.

This bears some resemblance to a previous incident in AZ some years back about a resident complaining of jet noise.
I know, it’s snopes, but they confirmed it.

That is the sound of FREEDOM !!!
.
Spent most of the rest of my life on Air Force bases. With 24 hour ops and the jet engine test facility there was almost always noise. I loved it.
I now live under part of the training area for fighters and choppers at Quantico MCB. Not as frequent but I can almost get my fix now and then.
When the Germans complained of GIs loud behavior in the
gasthause, the reply was “When the Russians come...”

I love watching the 17’s do touch and go’s at Kona airport! (should have been named Onizuka International Airport IMHO) Love the view at the dive site south of the field when they are down low. Very impressive and different sound. I see an occasional P3 sub hunter as well.
Wasn’t as bad as the stateroom I had next to the weapons elevator shaft. It would run all night, and when it wasn’t running the guy on the other side of the shaft had an electric guitar.
we also have U.S.N. P-3 Orion’s practicing touch & go (flights of 2) almost every day as well . They fly out of MCBH , now that Barbers Point is closed ( I think)
These crews are being chimed on by the nimbys too
Anchors Away !
The Navy threatened to shut down the base and the community started screaming. Evidently, they don't want the base to close, they just want the airplanes to leave. I'm not sure what the Navy is supposed to do with a base that is 5 miles inland that you can't operate aircraft from. I want so badly to shut down that base.
It startles you at first, but it’s amazing how quickly you get used to it.
Then, it startles you when it’s quiet. Test Cell was the $hit !!
This article is from yet another military hater on the islands. Quite a few around, including ones that just knew the Superferry was a military plot, and that the US was at fault for Pearl harbor by antagonizing the Japanese by basing the navy there.
Kailua-Kona ? I was there 3 years ago . Stayed in Keauhou ( Outrigger Kanaloa ) . Loved it and will return some day soon !
Nice hotel, nice breakfast buffet, not enough time to sample the rest of the place. Well away from the crowded part of Kailua. Would definitely choose it over any of the ritzy Wailoloa places.
Come back and stay, the BI needs more conservatives................
