Egyptian neighbors creating local militias

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Until recently, Seif Awad worked a day job as an account manager for Cisco.

But since Saturday he has begun volunteering at nights, protecting his neighborhood with a volunteer defense squad of young male neighbors armed with makeshift weapons. Last night he armed himself with a big stick. On Sunday, Awad bought gasoline canisters and started making Molotov cocktails.

"If anyone comes on the street we're going to throw those at them," Awad said. "And I have a friend here who has a gun."

Shortly before he spoke on the phone Sunday night with CNN, Awad says he and his comrades scared off a group of men who tried to scale the walls of his upscale gated residential neighborhood.

"They were trying to jump the walls and we ran at them," Awad recounted. "And when they saw us they fell back."

Real estate broker Karim Amer armed himself with a kitchen knife Saturday night and joined his own hastily formed neighborhood militia.

Coming to a subdivision near you.

Indeed. At that time the un-armed and un-prepared will finally comprehend the 2nd Amendment.

Coming to a subdivision near you.

Working doggedly here every day to prepare for that eventuality.

I see this as a sign of some good things that might come out of the whole present mess, if there are people willing to protect themselves, their families, their neighborhoods.

I prefer flamethrowers. Or pig urine could work if you know who is attacking.

Sooner or later people realize that they, themselves, are primarily responsible for their safety, even in dictatorships.

"Awad, the account manager, said on Saturday night his group detained a suspected looter with the help of patrolling Egyptian army soldiers. Awad said the troops, who are filling in the vacuum left by a police force that has largely left the streets, then made an example out of the suspected robber. "They undressed him and tied him up on top of a tank and they drove around with him.""

I applaud the Egyptian citizens and their army for this very practical approach to neighborhood policing.

A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

It is not beyond the pale that the same sort of uprising against tyranny will happen here in the USA. I am convince we are seeing the first post-islamist revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt and we must respond to them as such. People want dignity and freedom. The new governments will need to provide it or also fall. I lived 3 years in Cairo and traveled to Tunisia dozens of times. The people are proud and have a deep sense of history and national identity, religion important but second to the desire to have the necessities of life and freedom from repression, a life with integrity and dignity. Mubarek has elevated corruption to its pinnacle and kept it that way for 30 years. People simply had enough. We need to encourage democratic alternatives through their parliamentary system. The army will be the institution that carries the country into the next level of order. All men serve in it and it is loved and admired. They have credibility with the people. Security police are corrupt and oppressive, disliked. The army can keep the MB at bay.

You forgot something.

The unarmed and unprepared will be coming to you looking for you to take care of them and bitch about how you do it the entire time.
