Michelle Obama's $495 Gardening Boots Irk Me
The Stir Cafe ^ | 2/10/11 | Jenny Erikson

In a post I wrote regarding Michelle Obama and her plans to parent our children for us, I remarked about her $495 Tory Burch gardening boots. A few of the comments wondered why I brought them up, and why, as a capitalist, would I have a problem with pricey shoes?

The boots were mentioned to remind readers of how out of touch with reality the First Lady is. The average American mama doesn’t have a single pair of shoes in her closet that cost that much, let alone gardening boots. When I’m inclined to work outdoors, I put on a pair of three-year-old sneakers that are practically falling apart.

Referring to the self-appointed mom-in-chief’s aloofness when it comes to relating to us regular moms was useful to drive home the point that she is not qualified to make our parenting decisions for us. Only the best for the Obamas, whether it’s boots, school, vacation, vacation, vacation, or vacation. The rest of us can eat cake. Or carrot sticks.

Did she spend even one minute in that garden when she wasn't surrounded by TV cameras and Potemkin children? Did she do any mundane weed pulling and vegetable watering when the cameras weren't around? Or (vastly more likely) was all of that menial work handled by the White House grounds crew so it would be ready for when she put on her $500 boots and brought in another truckload of children for the harvest?

In Chicago boots like those are the in-town street boots. The more showy, pricey, and festooned, the better. Boots in Chicago winters make sense and these are traded for the fashion police pick 400 to 800 dollar pumps and stilletos in summer.

Aw, the H#%l with her anyway, we all know what phonies and liars they be. On another note, in the summer there’s nothing more I love to do than drive down our river road and buy vegetables from little kids with stands. They are so sincere and they are learning capitalism, from the ground up. And I tip them, cant wait for lemon squash!

Its not her shoes, its the lies and planned deception that annoys.

Plus I distinctly remember the lefties complaining about Sarah Palins expensive clothes. Now they complain that Sarah doesn’t wear designer clothes.

i go barefoot cause I can’t afford any shoes

You will quitcha complainin' when you meet someone with no feet.

"I complained because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet." So I stole his - he didn't need them.

My gardening boots: my mother’s 40 y.o. hiking boots, or for mud, a $20 pair of rubber boots.

But then nobody ever thought me in my garden was a photo op...

The rocks in my garden devoured my roto-tiller.

Well, by all means, get down to their level.

It was wrong when they did it and it doesn't appear a bit better when done by supposed 'conservatives'.

when working in my gardens or even doing basic yard work in the summer I wear a pair of orange flip flops. I bought them for $1.00 at the Dollar General Store about 3 yrs ago. I also go barefoot a lot. In cooler weather, I wear my $3 canvas sneakers. I cannot think of one reason I would spend 400+ dollars on garden boots.

Okay, I’m not one of her handlers, but Google can be their friends too.

I’m sure there are tons more for less than 300.00.

You didn’t have a depression era momma. Mine would not let us go “bare foot” in the yard or garden area for any reason — pin worms and ring worms were her fear from the 30s.

My momma was born in 1944. She spent much of her childhood summers barefoot as did my dad. Dad grew up on a farm and he wore boot when dealing with animals but the rest of the time he was barefoot. I’m surprised my grandparents weren’t more worried about that worm problem.
