Arrest warrant issued for Musharraf

An anti-terrorism court judge in Pakistan has issued an arrest warrant for former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in connection with the 2007 assassination of ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, officials have said.

"Judge Rana Nisar Ahmad has issued non-bailable warrant for former President Pervez Musharraf and directed him to appear before the court on February 19," Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, a public prosecutor, told AFP on Saturday.

He said "a joint investigation team that had been formed to probe the assassination said in its report Musharraf had involvement in the case and was equally responsible."

"The report said it was a broad conspiracy involving Pervez Musharraf, two police officials and terrorists," Ali said after the closed-door hearing that took place in Rawalpindi's Adiala prison.

Bhutto was killed in December 2007, in a gun and suicide bomb blast during a rally weeks after returning to Pakistan to campaign in new elections. Many of her supporters accuse Musharraf of not doing enough to ensure her protection.

London exile

Musharraf left Pakistan for London more than two years ago, but has expressed his intention to return to Pakistan and establish offices for his new political party by March.

His spokesman Saif Ali Khan told a private channel that Musharraf will defend himself before the court "at an appropriate time."

In December, police arrested two senior police officers, Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad, for alleged dereliction of duty for their "failure" to protect Bhutto.

Bhutto, who served two terms as prime minister, returned from exile two months before she was assassinated to stand for election.

Her widower, Asif Ali Zardari, led her Pakistan People's Party to election victory in February 2008 and is now president.

At the time of Bhutto's death, Musharraf's government blamed the assassination on Pakistan's Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, who denied any involvement.

Next up, arrest warrants are issued for every Jew in the world in connection with the assassination of Lebanon's Rafik Hariri in 2005.

Thanks Cardhu.

Well...it's going to be obvious to the muslim world that allying one's self with the US doesn't pay. And of course, Musharraf is foolish to expect any support from The Dali Bama.

In the wake of Egypt any muslim leader who has ever been perceived as western leaning or pro-US can expect to be exiled at best, and kangaroo courted and lynched at worst.

The problem with being a dictator is that you can never retire and relax without worrying that your successors will have some grudge.

“Ridiculous. Just another kind of assassination.”

ABSOLUTELY. They can’t figure out any other way to kill him, so they now use their legal system.

No different from what the Democrats were trying to do here with Bush-43, regarding waterboarding.

I remember Bhutto standing up in the middle of a sun roofed type car waving when she got shot. It was reported at the time that if she had not stood up in the car, she, probably, would still be alive.

Exactly so. Thanks, Obama! You're REALLY improving the Muslim world's perception of the United States!

Yepper. The dominoes are a-falling.

Joe 6-pack sees it crystally clearly, while the high priced DC talking heads giggle and guffaw at the phonies-in-the-square, Patrick "Achmed" Henrys.

What help was Musharraf to the U.S.? We’ve been looking for Bin Laden and Zawahiri for 10 YEARS and Musharraf did NOTHING. Then a great woman like Bhutto is there a week and she’s killed. I’m Glad Musharraf is OUT. If he has to go to Court, then so be it.

Really, the whole movement — including “The Tea Party” — is consumed entirely with debt and spending. Apparently, they’re the only “safe issues” anyone is allowed to touch.

The decision to wave the white flag on “social issues” has been made, apparently. We may now continue our national suicide.

That is why smart dictators hand pick their successors, usually it is someone who has benefited from the current dictatorship.
