HighSchool Wrestler Forfeits Match Against a Girl, In Iowa State Tournament on Principle
ChicoER Gate ^ | 2/17/11 | Chuck Wolk

Posted on 02/17/2011 3:22:50 PM PST by OneVike

When it became apparent that his opponent in the state tournament wrestling match would be a girl., e would be facing off against a girl, Joel Northrup, forfeited his match to her.  As a Christian, Joel is serious about his faith, and so he could not in good conscience wrestle with a  girl due to the manner in which a wrestler must grapple with their opponent. If only we had more boys raised to respect the fairer sex as much as Joel has been.   His parents are homeschooling him. but he has been allowed to wrestle with the Lin-Mar of Marion Iowa.  So Cassy Herkelman of Cedar Falls was able to win her first match at the Iowa State High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2011.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan (Black, the tournament's other female entrant) and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most of the high school sports in Iowa."

Linn-Mar Athletic Director Scott Mahmens did speak with the media, (Video above ) and said Northrup's parents are not at the tournament. Mahmens added that nobody from the school tried to influence Northrup, who is home schooled, to wrestle or not wrestle.

"He's a Linn-Mar Lion, and we're going to support what he's doing," Mahmens said. "Obviously his beliefs are more important to him (than a chance at a state title)."

His coach Doug Streicher did not speak with the media after the match.

I respect that young man and his parents. I’m not so sure about the female wrestler and hers.

After reading this, all I could think was “Holy Crap!” Is this for real?

I live in the people’s republic of NY, and even here we don’t have high school boys and girls wresting each other (at least outside of their parents’ basements). What kind of asinine state education bureaucrat would require boys to wrestle girls???

Article w/video Ping!

It is seldom we see boys who have respect for girls today. After all, we are told that we need to treat girls like boys. Well, Joel decided to treat the girl like a girl and refused to wrestle her. Check out this article of a stand up young man who forfeited his wrestling match in the state tournament. ..............

The Athletic Director seems like quite a guy, too.

Here is my post form an earlier thread:

When I was in Taw Kwon Do I wouldn’t hit or kick a girl as hard as I would a man. In fact, they got more licks in on me than they would have if they were a guy.

I can’t say it was fair for them as I wasn’t going to be as aggressive physically as I would a man and they weren’t learning as much from me except that I was going to block them.

I took a kick to the head once, got knocked to the ground and I got up and let the girl have it and good. But I felt terrible about it afterward and just went back to pulling punches and kicks and blocking.

I don’t want to compete with a woman in a contact sport.

It isn’t ever going to fair.

Good for the kid but, sad he will forfeit his chance at a state trophy

Here was my response to another poster who thought I had done girls a disservice in sparring:

thought I made it clear I had done her wrong. She wasn’t going to learn to block and evade if she didn’t hit hard enough times to get sick of it and learn how to protect and attack.

I don’t care to fight and I don’t want to do contact sports with a girl. It will never be fair.

I am genetically predisposed with muscles and a skeletal frame she won’t have, ever. Moreover, I ain’t just plain good, I am very competitive.

Wanna play board games, run a race or whatever, fine. I’ll go all out.

I just don’t want hitting a girl the same as I would a man on my conscience, even if we are wearing all that protective gear.

You can’t exactly leg sweep a girl. You could seriously injure their legs and cause a deformity. I like their legs too much to do that.

I don’t to break a rib or an arm or anything on them.

I just want to admire their form over drinks and some conversation.

As far control, sure and stopping at the skin but it ain’t the same against guys. We go all out and sometimes stuff happens. Just part of being a guy and playing guy games.

And yeah, I couldn’t kick her or any other girl in the chest. Couldn’t conceive of drilling em in the chest with a strong right. You have less targets on them as well.

Believe me Kong scolded me on more than one occassion for not sticking it them and said I was going to get “whooped” by a bunch of girls in a bar. (So damn funny hearing him say “whooped” and every time he said it I would laugh or smile. He once demanded “You think that’s funny”. I started laughing and said “Yep. That’s why I keep coming back. Cuz you’re a great teacher”. He just looked at me and said “Oh? And you know how to kiss my ? and he slapped his ass)

The whole class was laughing and he tried to get serious and then he bowled over hands on knees trying to control himself but was laughing to hard.

Took us about two minutes to get back to class after a couple of fits and starts of laughing.

As for the rest of your post I completely agree:

“Any woman, deserves to truly know what her abilities are; because her life may depend upon that skill at some point in time.

After all, isn’t the point of this discipline to compete against what the best you think you can be? It’s not to defeat your opponent, but to measure yourself against what you once were, and where you want to go. Every day, the goal is to go to bed smarter than you were when you woke up.”

I am just probably not the guy to teach that. But I won’t get “Whooped” by a bunch of girls in a bar, unless they’re all HOT and it feels good.

he already has his trophy, his integrity and respect.

God will bless him in many things throughout his life with things that mean more than a trophy that could possibly end up in a box in the attic one day.

I don’t have as much honor as you, or the young wrestler, but I do suspect this much:

THERE IS NO HONOR IN BEATING A WOMAN.

Aside from questions of decorum, respect, and chivalry, competing with girls in hard contact sports are lose-lose. If you win, it’s “So what, you beat a girl,” and if you lose, Lord help you.

Or get charged with sexual assault if you grab your opponent in the wrong place.

Took fencing in college. No problem targeting the chest in that class. Actually get MORE of a target when a girl is turned sideways...
