The Montana House has overwhelmingly endorsed a plan to disregard the federal law protecting endangered and threatened species. Republicans enthused by Gov. Brian Schweitzer's recent tough talk on wolves led a 61-39 vote Saturday to nullify the federal Endangered Species Act in Montana.

Tea party politics in the Legislature have spawned increasing belief in an 18th-century doctrine that purported to give states the ultimate say in constitutional matters...

I sure will be nice to see states giving real push back on the federal regulations.

The doctrine is only obscure because journalists and most Americans are historically illiterate. Jefferson and Madison were quite clear that nullification was part of the deal....part of the checks and balances. Up until the War Between the States the New England states and others resorted to nullification (and claimed the right to secede).

I’m not trying to hijack this thread but did anyone else watch that show (Nat Geo?) last night about the three coyotes stalking and killing that female folk singer up in Nova Scotia? That was some scary stuff. We all might want to dump that goofy “endangered species” crap.

Endangered species, immigration, health care, gun control, union busting — many states are just choosing to ignore the federal government and go their own way. That’s how it’s supposed to be. But Obama be hatin’ it.

Now they need to nullify the spotted owl designation.

Pray for America

...belief in an 18th-century doctrine...

At least they got the century right. The nullification doctrine dates to the time of the adoption of the constitution and was not invented by southerners to protect slavery as is often asserted.

I had the same thought. Next the AP will be disparaging conservatives for “valuing the contents of a primitive, unjust ancient document known as the ‘U.S. Constitution.’”

I agree about dumping the Endangered Species Act.

However, it does not cover coyotes. They are no more endangered than are Opossums, Rabbits, Armadillos or Kudzu.

Damn, the states just keep rolling out the punches one right after the other, if this keeps up we might actually take this country back

This is also proof that the time and effort spent on the state and local levels of the elections last year were well spent. The Federal government maybe a Leviathan, but the states are not.

Apropos of my posting a couple days ago about MT and wolves, here’s our new GOP governor in Wyoming on the issue:
