Last living U.S. WWI veteran dies

Frank Buckles, the last living U.S. World War I veteran, has died, a spokesman for his family said Sunday. He was 110. Buckles “died peacefully in his home of natural causes” early Sunday morning, the family said in a statement sent to CNN late Sunday by spokesman David DeJonge Buckles marked his 110th birthday on February 1, but his family had earlier told CNN he had slowed considerably since last fall, according his daughter Susannah Buckles Flanagan, who lives at the family home near Charles Town, West Virginia

About 20 years ago the little southwestern PA town were I live had their annual Veteran's Day Parade. One of the vehicles in the procession carried two WW1 vets. One Veteran had a sign which he hung out the window of the car. It read “Flag Burners are Traitors! Hang Them!” There was no doubt that in his day,that is just what they would have done.

One hundred years are not so long as I used to think. My paternal grandfather was born in 1879 and died in 1965, his father was born in 1844 and served in the confederate army. I was born in 1944. There are a few people still living who saw the last days of the 19th century.

There is a great old bronze Doughboy statue in front of the Monongahela,PA Post Office. Sadly,most folks walking buy have no idea what it represents.

I agree. When I was a small child in the early 1950s there were thousands of WWI and even quite a few Spanish American War vets still around. I think that there may have been a Civil War vet or two still alive at that time too.

You're right. The last survivor of the Union Army, Albert Woolson, died in 1956 at the age of 109.

My revolutionary vet forefather died in 1855 at 89 or 90; his grandkids and great grandkids served in the CW as the age range during that particular war was significant and not as limited to those 18-40 yrs of age. It isn’t too hard to conceive a CW vet knowing both a revoltionary vet and a WWII or even Korean War vet (as a child) passing the stories along.

My grandmother’s brother fought in WWI. He passed away almost 20 years ago at the age of 96.

When I tried asking about his experiences in WWI, his face when gray and he said nothing. He must have seen some horrible stuff.

Civil War vets march silent today in stone or bronze in courtyards across America. Now the World War I veterans join them.

My grampa was a WWI vet - though I really didn’t know it until after he died (98 in the ‘80s). He was old for a soldier and old for a father (never mind grandpa), but it’s nice to think this “Child of the ‘80s” had that link.
