New Life Church hero says she was asked to leave because she's gay

COLORADO SPRINGS - The security guard who saved lives by shooting a gunman at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs has apparently been asked to leave.

In December 2007, Jeanne Assam - working as a volunteer security guard - shot Matthew Murray after he killed two people outside the church. He killed two others the night before at a training center for Christian missionaries in Arvada.

Assam was honored for her quick action. Murray likely would’ve killed more people at the church if she had not shot him repeatedly then pinned him down.

Assam says last year when she told church leaders she is gay, she was asked to leave the church.

New Life pastor Brady Boyd told the Colorado Springs Gazette the report is untrue. "We would never tell someone to leave because of their sexual orientation," Boyd says. "Jeanne will always be a hero at New Life."

Assam gave a speech on Saturday, February 19 at the Pride Center’s annual masquerade ball, a fundraiser for the gay community in Colorado Springs.

The Gazette reports she spoke of the pressures society places on gay people.

New Life Church was in the national spotlight in 2006 when Pastor Ted Haggard left after admitting he had had a relationship with a male escort in Denver.

She has a history of lying. Got fired for it. Or was that homophobia too?

Straight or Lesbian, it matters not to me.

But it does to the Body of Christ. There is no way to claim being a Christian and then announcing that you are going to embrace and celebrate your sin.

Her feat was pure bravery and she is a hereon to be sure.
The story is her accusation that she was asked to leave the church.
I do not believe her. I know that church, I know those people, I believe she is lying.

Yes, she's a promoting her book. My guess is that there's a financial incentive there.

Is the New Life Church required to accept someone who is openly and aggressively advocating sin?

Correction: The words are normal, not straight as defined by homosexuals, for a sexually dimorphic species and homosexual to describe the mentally deranged condition. Would it matter to you if they were pederastic, a condition ingrained in the male homosexual lifestyle? The mentally deranged have no business in law enforcement. Stop buying the marketing of deviance; this isn’t hollywood.

“Another person that doesn’t believe in giving God His due by supporting the church that Jesus died for.”

Jesus did not die for a church. He died to pay the penalty of sin for mankind.

Yes, she acted heroically and I admire her for that. But that is an Earthly treasure and she can’t take it with her. Some of us pray for so much more for her.

Thanks for posting that. Not that it will make some of these folks drop the stones they're holding....

A few notes.

First, it looks like I was right to caution folks about the role of Gazette columnist Barry Noreen in this story.

Second, even if we account for the certainty that Ms. Assam is putting the best possible face on her side of the story, it seems quite clear that something really did happen at New Life, related to her role at the church and her homosexuality. I believe her claim that she was deeply hurt by the episode.

And finally, if we believe that even some of Assam's story is true, Pastor Boyd's quoted response looks less than forthright. (Remembering again that Mr. Noreen may not have provided full context, either in his questions to Boyd, or in his depiction of Boyd's response.)

The fact remains that she cannot claim to be “born again” and embrace/celebrate her sin. The choice is hers and not the churches.

I agree, His purpose was to pay the debt we could not for our sins. Thereby, creating ‘the church’, the body of believers in Christ.

Ephesians 5:25-27 - Think on this!

25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

“....gave Himself for it......” GAVE Himself FOR IT, the church.

He does this for the Church, the Bride of Christ - specifically all individuals who entrusted themselves to His Gracious gift by faith. He died for them collectively and they will be glorified.

The Father will eventually present the Bride to the Son, after sanctifying them and glorifying them completely. It is individuals that are sanctified and glorified - making the entire Bride without blemish. Ephesians uses the word Church (”gathering”) collectively to represent all those who are saved. Collectively, the Church will be spotless at the end of the age.

[I would add that the main point of this passage grammatically deals with the command for husbands to love their wives. Christ’s relationship to His Church is a subpoint to support the main point by elaborating how husbands are to love their wives.]

This is different than the way you are framing this verse. We will have to disagree on this point. I do not think we are far apart.

best to you,
ampu

We are close, infact. You just seem to not want to equate ‘the church’ that you might tithe to, as ‘the church’ that Jesus will come to bring to Him.

They are one and the same. Without knowing your spiritual condition, I hope we are both part of that church.

“We are close, infact. You just seem to not want to equate ‘the church’ that you might tithe to, as ‘the church’ that Jesus will come to bring to Him.”

The church I give hilariously to is PART of the Body of Christ, the Bride. I believe the NT standard of giving is far beyond the tithe...

“They are one and the same.”

My church (gathering) is just part of the CHURCH - not the totality of it.

“Without knowing your spiritual condition, I hope we are both part of that church.”

If you are part of His Bride, and in the Body of Christ, the Church, then indeed we are. If not, I’m sad to say we are not.

best,
ampu

One last thought that came after I hit “post”...

I don’t ever assume that everyone in any church gathering is part of the Body of Christ. Some are, some are not.

While you’re thinking on that, try thinking on this...

Eph 5:22-24 - “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”

And...

Ephesians 5:33 - “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

For some reason, my wife doesn’t want me to love her as I love myself. She wants me to love her as she loves herself. That’s a huge difference but it is never taught.

The feminization of the Church has brought the whole ‘name it and claim it’ and ‘beam me up’ theology in because the Church is trying to define how Christ will ‘love’ her rather than accept the same suffering and persecution that Christ accepted. Doesn’t work in an earthly marriage and doesn’t work in a heavenly one either.

What on earth are you trying to say? I’ll try to answer though.

There is nothing wrong and everything right with what those verses say.

Whether she wants you to love her as SHE loves herself, IF you are a Christian, the word says to love her as yourself. Her wishes are moot. It wasn’t taught because it isn’t correct.

I am somewhat confused by the last paragraph
