Low-flow toilets cause a stink in SF Phillip Matier,Andrew Ross Monday, February 28, 2011 San Francisco's big push for low-flow toilets has turned into a multimillion-dollar plumbing stink. Skimping on toilet water has resulted in more sludge backing up inside the sewer pipes, said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the city Public Utilities Commission. That has created a rotten-egg stench near AT&T Park and elsewhere, especially during the dry summer months. The city has already spent $100 million over the past five years to upgrade its sewer system and sewage plants, in part to combat the odor problem. Now officials are stocking up on a $14 million, three-year supply of highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite - better known as bleach - to act as an odor eater and to disinfect the city's treated water before it's dumped into the bay. It will also be used to sanitize drinking water. That translates into 8.5 million pounds of bleach either being poured down city drains or into the drinking water supply every year. Not everybody thinks it's a good idea.

And where is the screaming from the Enviro-Nazis who are adamant that chlorine bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) is harmful to the environment? How many TONS being poured in to "sanitize" and deoderize their mess?
WALLOWING_IN_THEIR_OWN_FECAL_MATTER_PING!
What is with the libtards? Didn’t Sheryl Crow teach them you only need 1 tissue to clean their faces aka their behinds?
Add this asinine Federal intrusion onto the list of things to be NULLIFIED in the future.
I hear someone brought up a bill to stop that asinine CFL/anti-Edison-bulb law, and this toilet thing is another thing to stop.
I have all low-flow toilets in this house, 3 of the 4 are unreliable at even a regular #1 toilet paper flush (never mind the times they’ve stuck and overflowed). I’ve had more failures in the 3 years we’ve been in this house than I ever experienced in my life in my parent’s 40yo house with old 3+gal toilets.
And don’t forget dishwashers that don’t clean dishes properly, sine the nazis banned phosphates in dishwasher detergent....
Lots of people complain about these toilets flushing ineffectively, but this is the very first I’ve heard about the use of such toilets resulting in sewage which does not flow well. If this is true, instead of bleaching out the system at huge expense, why not cycle “processed” water back into it?
Take me out of the ball game
Get me out of the crowd
I’m too nauseous for peanuts and cracker jacks
I don’t ever want to ever come back!
It’s those damned chickens again.
Maybe the stink comes from their immorality!
Many, many moons ago, I read a piece on pros and cons of low flush toilets and the conclusion was..That our country-type septic systems require a certain % of water/solids in order for the bacteria to digest the solid stuff.
Now, if this is indeed true, I suspect the same holds true for municipal systems and adding bleach in massive amounts only exacerbates the problem by killing off the good digestive bacteria.
But, DON’T tell ‘em I said so.
Serves “em rightly!
These dumb asses. $12 bucks can buy enough bacteria, that you use in a septic tank, that will devour the stinky stuff, the solid waste.
The people running this state, country are complete idiots.
Half the population doesn’t use toilets, just let’s it go on the sidewalk. Just imagine how bad this would be if everyone was toilet trained . . .
Ya think? ( ^8 }
Re: Rid-ex etc.
I was just told by a friend that a plumber had told her that plain ol’ yeast does as much good as the brand-name stuff at breaking down waste materials in septic systems and is a whole lot cheaper by the pound in places like Sam’s club or other big outlets.. I get it for $3/#.
Once again, Momma nature does it best!
The regulations for use of “gray water” in Colorado are already onerous. I can’t imagine that such use would be legal under Cali’s morass of laws, although I don’t know this for sure.
Always said that San Francisco was full of shit. Looks like I have been proven right (the only time the word “right” will ever appear next to San Francisco, except for “exit Right”.)
To #15: Just wait until those mutant yeast come blasting out of the sewers and toilets, and devour half of San Francisco’s population.
Now, that would be a movie I could go to.
“The Rise of the Mutant Yeast”, coming to a toilet near you.
Starring Michael Moore as the head “yeast”. Script by Oliver Stoned. Screenplay by Cheryl Crow (I love her). Financed by George “Backed Up” Soros.
Bleach? Are they crazy? (Yes!)
They should just dump in the Plumb Clean (bacteria + enzymes) and let the water flow.
What idiots!
bleach loses it’s effectiveness after 1.5 years in liquid form.
Is this in powdered form? So just add water...?
