The Wall Street Journal ^ | 3/6/11 | KRIS MAHER and AMY MERRICK

Posted on 03/06/2011 5:29:34 PM PST by Ogie Oglethorpe

The leader of the 14 Wisconsin Senate Democrats who left the state last month to block legislation that would curb public-employee union rights said the senators plan to return "in the relatively near future," because negotiations with the governor have failed.

In defeat, they declare victory. Typical 'Rats...

Sorry if this is a dupe - did a search and didn't see it anywhere, but I am surprised it was not previously posted.

They haven’t been defeated yet. I’ll wait for a vote.

So, the Wall Street Journal can find these dweebs to interview but the Wisconsin State Troopers can’t... interesting.

They must have turned 3 or 4 GOP senators.

Is that what Democrats call what they’ve been doing, negotiations? And here I thought it was rabble-rousing.

“...because negotiations with the governor have failed.”

If they were interested in negotiations they would have been in their chamber seats. Only a fool would negotiate with a coward hiding in the closet!!!

Oh please everyone.

They are going to have to return before 30 days are up because that is when the Gov can declare their seats vacant & hold new elections.
It would be even more pathetic if they all came back on the 29th day.

I doubt it but they probably think at this point they have public opinion on their side what with all the demonstrations etc. They will send in a sacrificial Dem to make up a quorum and let the vote go forward with the plan to use it as a club to beat the Republicans over the head. We’ll see if it works.

I'm curious about that. I know it's 30 days but is is it 30 days of missed Senate sessions or 30 days from the time they left the state? Also, are you sure that it's the governor and not the Senate who declares their seats vacant?

The Ohio GOP senate only passed it by 1 vote. 5 or 6 GOP senators voted no. I would not rule out the possibility that it will be close.

All of the WI Senate Republicans are firmly behind Walker. There’s no Arlen Specters there.

If enough Wisconsin Republicans voted against the Governor it would be a huge defeat for him.

Another poster noted that the Governor could declare the Dem seats open if they were absent more than 30 days. First I’ve heard of that but that presents a reasonable explanation for their return.

I don’t think they have turned any GOP senators. There was one wobbly one, Schultz, but the rest have become so incensed at the Dems leaving the state, that they won’t budge. Last I heard, Schultz had even agreed not to offer his amendment to limit the ending of collusive bargaining to 2013. It was also reported that he wouldn’t vote against the bill either. Schultz is trying to save himself from a recall. But, if he screws up this bill, he will face a challenge from his right.

Crossing the state line puts a trooper out of his jurisdiction, and thus beyond the scope of his or her authority.

I am sure they don’t want to arrested and be recalled so they have come back. They don’t make any sense though saying they are coming back because negotiations failed. They had plenty of time to negotiate before they ran and since they were gone there was nothing left to negotiate. I know walker still tried to talk to them and hammer a deal, but it was for them to return. And now they are returning because negotiations failed? Makes no sense other than fearing for their seats.

If this truly is a solid block of unapologetic, conservative Republicans, I’ll seriously consider moving to that state.
