Military pay would stop with a government shutdown
The Federal Computer Week ^ | Mar 14, 2011 | FCW staff

Posted on 03/14/2011 8:56:22 PM PDT by ScubieNuc

According to draft guidance circulating around the Defense Department, military personnel would be required to work without pay if the government shuts down, reports the Air Force Times.

That differs from the 1995 shutdown when U.S. troops reported to work and were paid, the article states. But the 13-page contingency plan, in which DOD highlighted which parts of the military would continue to operate if the government shuts down, states that this time the military would miss a payday if a shutdown continued through April 1.

I hope that all of you saying “BS” are correct.

There is no guarantee that this is BS...but, after spending my last 3.5 years of service at the Pentagon, I can tell you that there are always a ton of unapproved policy memos floating around. Maybe 10% ever become policy...after heavy revision.

My best to your son.

My information did not come from the Military Times or any other publication- it came from an active duty soldier in the Army, he was told this officially at work yesterday.

Nobody i s"told" anything official. If it was official, it was written down. Otherwise, it is gossip.

Worrisome, but gossip.

I guess Obama’s idea of essential goverment functions takes no regard for Constitutional Government functions.

PJ Crowley was a State Dept employee.
You are correct, except it is reported PJ was not terminated but only removed as spokesman. It was my intent to convey that DOD “dismissed” him to the extent that it was reportedly a key element resulting in his removal. Such reports may have been floated, of course, to give cover to unilateral action by the O team.

I would not believe what the media and his lawyer say about it.
You view re statements by the media and involved attorneys is prudent. Fortunately, in this case, we can reach our conclusions by other means.

My preference is to evaluate and compare the recorded statements of the actors themselves. For instance, PJ, is well-connected with DOD (06 ret.) and is otherwise an informed insider with a strong Clinton background. He did not dismiss out of hand the charges in the question, but responded in a way that could constitute affirmation of the allegations.

I’ll…say that he (Manning) is probably being treated just fine.
Your optimism is to be admired. USMC brigs are not known for their hospitality and despite their best efforts, they may not yet have fully completed the changes required by repeal of DADT. Perhaps even worse for Manning, it is almost certain his detention is being supervised by civilian operatives.

Manning should be put up against a wall and shot.

With only very slightly changed circumstances, he would be.
Can't imagine what his defense will be, except perhaps he was suffering from an aggravated episode of "hissy fit".

No pay, no work.

Nope. Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, coasties & Marines will endure this like every other hardship that they encounter. They will gripe and complain, then salute smartly and do their duty.

Ha! lol Work slow downs are par for the course for the Navy. ;~) Why do you think their unofficial motto is “Hurry up and wait.”?

Last I checked the military is not Union. Remember there are tens of thousands in a war zone. I don’t think a work stoppage will work.

I’m not in a union either, but if my employer stops paying me, I’m not going to keep working.

I do realize that it’s the military and the situation is a little different.

I have been on the phone all morning. I have called several Cong. and Sen., even ones that don’t represent me. EVERY single one said that Active Duty will be paid, along with the FBI, Border Patrol and Coast Guard. I’m assuming that Reserve and Guard may not be included.

Govennment “shut downs” are not real shut downs. Mail still gets delivered, Social Security checks still go out, Medicare paitents still get care and the miliatry keeps fighting and training.

It’s the “non-essential” government employees that, temporarily” receive no pay but get it back when the “shut down” ends.

The military is designated essential. This also includes police, fire fighting, air traffic controllers, utlities, and prisons.

Police, fire fighting, and utilitys have absolutely no business being on the federal payroll period.

I’d like to abolish Federal prisons too, so that the Feds would be wholly deepened upon the state prison system, with the specific requirement that no man can be taken by the federal goverment out of his state To be held in any other State’s prison system.

I say this cause I want states to be able to do what Ohio did to help cripple and ultimately kill of the 2nd bank of the United States.

I don’t think it was referring to state police, fire fighters, etc. The feds have plenty of them too.

But the definition was a generic writing so was probably just for “government” without specification.

I did some more looking and some Pentagon activities would be curtailed but was more bureaucratic stuff. New Socical Security and Medicare paper work is “shut down” but not the payment of current enrollees etc.

I think there probably should be some federal prisons for federal crimes. Otherwise, use the states.
