According to draft guidance circulating around the Defense Department, military personnel would be required to work without pay if the government shuts down, reports the Air Force Times.
That differs from the 1995 shutdown when U.S. troops reported to work and were paid, the article states. But the 13-page contingency plan, in which DOD highlighted which parts of the military would continue to operate if the government shuts down, states that this time the military would miss a payday if a shutdown continued through April 1.

Soldiers and their families will get paid. I’d love to see the commies blunder their way into that scenario. The Marxist Onada needs the military to remain at least neutral toward him. Difficult for me to believe even Onada will go there. But, then, Marxists, afterall, are merely children masquerading as adults. So destructive temper tantrums are to be expected.
BS. You can find “draft guidance” scooting around the Pentagon that says anything you want.
Just got off the phone with my Congressman’s office.......the military WILL be paid even if the gov. shuts down. They are part of a separate appropriations bill that is not part of the continuing resolution.
Whatfreakingever — Go ahead, America — just take it all away. You’ve come to our door asking and TAKING the ultimate so many times ....this will seem like nothing. We’ll figure it out — like we always do. I bet my husband WOULD go in w/o pay if he was told.
But what the hey — take away the security clearance due to the fact that he couldn’t pay his bills DUE TO THE FACT that the govt shut down? I mean ..can’t we cut some slack here?
Military wife rant OVER.
The memo, prepared in early March but never formally issued as guidance, attempts to spell out what defense missions would shut down and what would stay open in the event funding stops.
I hope that all of you saying “BS” are correct. I read the story initially on the Navy Times site and then searched elsewhere for confirmation. I saw the same story in the Airforce Times.
Right now my son, who is in the Army, is out in the field this week, so I can’t ask him what he has heard yet, but I will post again after I hear from him. Like others have posted, the younger soldiers live paycheck to paycheck. Some depend on that paycheck for their auto payments and some for their rent. I am extremely Pissed off if this is true because the ones who need our tax dollars the most may be hurt the most.
I have called multiple Congressmen, from mine, to Boehner and Allen West, and I am not done yet. EVERY single one has said that the military WILL be paid not matter what.
I would suggest that EVERYONE call their representatives.
This story originated in the Military Times over the weekend. The Military Times is NOT a military newspaper, it is owned by Gannett, they have time and time again published misinformation.
Did they take a page from the CA scare-mongering playbook?
This sounds like a pantload of BS.
Although I do recall an incident back in the early ‘80s when they threatened to shutdown the gov’t and military folks were talking smack about not coming into work.
We were all assembled into one of the large maintenance hangars and were told if we didn’t show up for work, either an Article 15 or a Court Martial was in our future.
Didn’t happen, things got worked out. As I suspect this will.
How much can the AFAF support?
I know they have a knack for helping out and sometimes not depending on the situations each member is facing. This looks like one where the Jr. Enlisted are going to get hammered.
Any feedback from them on how they can/will help out if the shutdown [no pay] occurs?
Here’s my put to FReepers, if you live or work on or near a base, stop by the Base Chapel and check out what you can do to help, their food pantries almost always need items.
Also, get with a unit 1st Sgt. and get them to check with AFAF [or equivalent] and see what they’re going to do in the event of a shutdown to help our servicemembers during this time.
If you can, donate and help them out.
If the military doesn't get paid then we shouldn't get paid either. But, I still want to dedicate this one to the House of Representatives. (to the tune of Slap 'er Down Again Pa)
Shut 'er down again y'all Shut 'er down again Make 'em do with less y'all Way too much to spend We don't want our young'uns stuck with our sin So cut that budget down to size Or shut 'er down again |
They better be careful about a slow-down or not working- especially in the Army. The Army is downsizing and is chaptering people out for everything they can think of right now.
I would call the Congressman back and ask him if what he told you is true, then WHY are the troops being told- officially- that they will NOT be paid if something is not done by Friday? If your Congressman is right...then someone is scaring the troops for political reasons and we the people need to know about it.
This has blown up since the weekend. My son called me on Sunday night. When he went to formation on Mon. am, they were talking about it.
That is the point, this is NOT official. It came from an article in the Military Times. With regard to my son’s unit, the majority are spread out right now on pre-deployment leave.
Ask all these Congressmen why soldiers are being told they will not be paid unless something is done by Friday? If they are being told this for political reasons we need to know and we need to track it back and nail someone’s hide to the barn door. I know a soldier with a “Brady Bunch” family of 5 children that is in the Army and was told he would not get paid unless something is done by Friday. His wife is employed as a beauty operator and with the economy the way it is her income is already down so they are sweating.
To all Democrats ... “BROTHER, YOU ASKED FOR IT!”
I told those that I called that SOMEBODY had better get out ahead of this “rumor” and officially explain that this is NOT the case! These folks have enough on their plates as it is.
The Soviet Union collapsed because it failed to make payday.
I read the whole thing last night and it doesn’t say that military pay will not happen. All it does is discuss the possibilities and say that we have previous incidents to look to for guidance.
I don’t believe for one minute that military pay will be affected by a shut down.
My information did not come from the Military Times or any other publication- it came from an active duty soldier in the Army, he was told this officially at work yesterday. I talked to him and his wife last night. He was told if Congress didn’t do something by Friday they would NOT be paid. More than one person in the military has posted on this thread that they were told this also.
I am pretty darn sure Congress will do whatever it is they have to do to pay the military even if they do shut down the government, they can’t stand the heat they will get if they don’t- but my point is if this is a political scare tactic to tell the troops they won’t get paid then somebody needs to be nailed to the barn door for using this tactic. Especially now when so much is expected of our troops.
