What seems to be causing the spiking in levels is the venting of the reactors, either steam or other. After the ventingin, the level seems to drop. That dropping isn’t necessarily a sign of “normalization.”

The magnitude was reported as 6.0, epicenter east of Chiba. They are also reporting “intensities” at different towns. It’s their measure of how much damage might occur, and goes from 0 to 7.

Their buildings are well designed for seismic loads but one wonders how much repetitive stress loading they can take before they reach the end of their fatigue life.

I’m going to make a crazy prediction: The Japanese are going to ask the US Navy to use a tactical weapon on it.
The winds are supposed to change Friday to blow inland and could contaminate Tokyo; they can’t risk that. A small tactical warhead used on the plant when the winds are blowing out to sea would end this quickly.
That’s my guess at why the Japanese are requesting help from the US military. They don’t have those kind of weapons in their arsenal, and we do.
CNN confirms.
