At first glance, the numbers released by the Census Bureau last week showing a precipitous drop in Detroit’s population — 25 percent over the last decade — seem to bear a silver lining: most of those leaving the city are blacks headed to the suburbs, once the refuge of mid-century white flight.
But a closer analysis of the data suggests that the story of housing discrimination that has dominated American urban life since the early 20th century is far from over.
Detroit is not the only American city to face persistent residential segregation, but it is among the worst: it has ranked among the 10 most segregated metropolitan areas in the United States since the mid-20th century (though the rate of black-white segregation there has fallen markedly in the last decade, as blacks have moved into once-exclusive white neighborhoods).
As Detroit’s black population skyrocketed during the Great Migration from the South, the city’s whites fought what they called the “Negro invasion” with every tool at their disposal. From 1945 to 1965 whites attacked at least 250 black families — usually the first or second to move into all-white neighborhoods — breaking windows, burning crosses and vandalizing homes.
When white Detroiters could not win by fighting, they fled to the suburbs. Indeed, for a half-century beginning in the 1950s, Detroit lost nearly half of its population, almost all whites.
Those who left the city cited various reasons: desire for a little green space, new housing, better schools, freedom from crime. Few of them acknowledged the racial motive behind white flight, that words like “freedom from crime” were code for moving away from blacks.

And by the way, why should someone who moves be expected to provide a "moral" explanation for doing so?
The disgusting author of this tripe obviously knows nothing about the conditions that made Detroit what it is today.
I grew up on the east side of the city in the 60’s-80’s.
My father owned a 9-unit townhouse on Gratiot, near Van Dyke. Most of the tenants there were related to each other, and some were third generation welfare recipients. I used to have to go down there with my dad and help him snake out the sewer pipes when they put bones from t-bone steaks in their garbage disposer. Standing in four inches of sewage from their disregard for their own living conditions gave me a deep appreciation for ownership and self respect.
The vast majority of Detroiters- both white and black- brought this upon themselves by voting for CRIMINALS such as Coleman Young, the unions, and Kwame Kilpatrick.
Screw them.
The blacks are moving into the older suburbs and bringing Detroit with them. You have middle class and upper class blacks sprinkled into the more exclusive suburbs. Those whites that can move further away are. Livingston County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. That’s a result of further white flight. My own parents live there and my dad likes it because the big city amenities are close by but not the big city bs that you get living closer in to Detroit. And as blacks leave Detroit, gentrification is taking place in Corktown. Once home and property are safe in that area, look for it to spread as the inner ring suburbs fall apart.
Sugrue plans on moving to Detroit so he can study the natives up close and personal? No? I didn’t think so.

So the conclusion of this article is that whitey flight is racist, but black flight is OK.
Another in the multitudes of attempts by liberals to coax just a little more white-guilt out of the people they are trying to screw. Truth be told, the housing shortage for these economically displaced Americans is probably just a severe shortage of suitable Section 8 housing - not discrimination.
Especially those in Liberia. It would be 100% begging to go home to America. Land of the Free. We aren’t perfect but God made this the best place ever for everyone if they would just take advantage of FREEDOM!
Two comments on the article. One the author never mentions the gimme more riots of the sixties that made people want to leave the city. The other is the Fannie Mae Freddie Mac lending of money to those that could not afford housing. If leaving an area that could get you killed or not lending money to someone on welfare is racist so be it.

Somehow, blacks moving away from blacks to live in white communities is racism by whites.
In addition to trying to get away from crime infested, crack ridden, gang controlled "neighborhoods", must black are moving to the burbs because they are trying to get their kids an education. The Detroit Public School system, despite receiving almost $2,500 more to "educate" each kid has a drop out rate of 75% - and those who do finish are performing at a 6th grade level.
The author may try to rationalize that racism is at play here, but the real story is that Detroit is a microcosm of Atlas Shrugged.

Baltimore City is well on its way. Willy Don Schaefer fostered a renaissance when he was mayor. Every mayor since then has torn down every thing that was built up.

All of a sudden the Blacks who are heading south were discriminated by the whites in Detroit. The times still doesn’t have a clue as to why the whites fled Detroit and liberal democrat cities like it.

Whites left because white culture is incompatible with black culture. Going to church and raising your kids to respect others and be responsible for your own success or failure is the opposite of the black urban culture of racist hate, perpetual victimhood and violent crime.

I’d like to hear his opinion after walking a couple blocks to the market and back a few times.
I can see him at his computer hungry with bruised ribs, a bruised cheek bone and a knot on his head trying to justify his racism for wanting to leave.
