The Chill Returns, But Not For Long! Walter Reed - Week 310, March 25, 2011
3/28/11 | Kburi

Posted on 03/28/2011 4:06:11 AM PDT by kburi

Winter won’t just go quietly and chilly weather returned. We had a solid group of ten with several visitors. One wounded warrior came up to Trooprally and thanked him and the DC Chapter for being here. He is leaving next week to go back to Germany and then on to his unit in Afghanistan. Traffic was lighter this week, but the normal honks and waves were robust.
Towards the end of the evening, a car full of moonbats came by yelling anti- war vulgarities and giving us the finger. ANSWER and other wackos are in town for another White House protest and these were likely participants.

Two buses returned a little after 9 pm.

We had been told that the buses are carrying more Marines in recent weeks. Tonight we displayed two large Marine Corps flags, (courtesy of Trooprally and RonGKirby) as the buses returned. Semper Fi.

Margaret of the Aleethia Foundation sent us this summary of last night’s dinner…

Hi Guys Hopefully the buses got back before nine. March 25 is "National Medal of Honor Day", around 7:45 pm, several MOH recipients dropped by to talk to the guys..... and, of course, the service members being in awe of these heroes.... wanted photos taken etc...TriWest Healthcare Alliance was the sponsor tonite, and the dinner was held at Morton's.

Three of the MOH recipients were: Major Jay Vargas USMC - Vietnam ; Cpl Woody Williams USMC WWII; and Major Drew Dix US Army Ret..(first enlisted special forces soldier to receive the medal).

Postscript on Week 309, March 18, 2011

Margaret also dropped us a note commenting on Week 309, March 18, 2011 Walter Reed Rally:

Hi Guys
Just read your weekly report and watched the awesome video of last Friday events. That was an impressive speech by Iraqi Representative. Listening to the cheers, seeing all the signs and flag waving folks, horns and seeing the buses returning...made it feel real.

The "Friday Night Dinner" was at the New Zealand Embassy...The Kiwis were very friendly and the troops had a wonderful time...From the moment they stepped off the bus and received a Powhiri - the Maori welcome upon their arrival...the New Zealanders warriors perform a ceremony with threatening gestures, grimaces, calling out battle screams etc. It was a most impressive beginning to a fun evening.

We had three buses and two vans of wounded service members from WRAMC and NNMC...it took 40 minutes to load the buses and get them going...So I was glad to see everyone waited to cheered them back....The white smaller buses usually contains the inpatients and the heavy electric wheelchairs...It was the second time out to dinner for one of the guys in the wheelchair...You could see him waving in the video.

Thanks again for all the support...Many of the patients are Marines with missing limbs and have been transferred over from NNMC to WRAMC to continuing their healing journey. So it is their first experience with the Friday night "Freepers!" and they are quite touched...
Warm regards,
Margaret --

Again, we all thank Aleethia Foundation for coordinating the Friday night dinners, the sponsors and the restaurants who provide the meals. These Friday dinners provide our soldiers a welcome break from the hard work of recovering.

The countdown to the 6th Year Anniversary, or 312 consecutive Friday nights at Walter Reed, now begins in earnest. On April 8, week 312, we will be remembering all of the Freepers and patriotic groups who have made this support for the wounded warriors possible. If you can’t come on the 8th, please come when you can.

Announcement of 6th Year Anniversary at Walter Reed (April 8, 2011):

On April 8, 2011, The DC Chapter of Free Republic will complete 6 years, or 312 consecutive Friday nights, at the Front Gates of Walter Reed. We invite all those Freepers who were here at the beginning, or those who have joined us periodically to join us on that night.
Without them, and there were many, we wouldn’t have been able to make this strong statement of support for the wounded warriors and their families. We also invite all the visitors who have stopped by to also join us.

You mentioned leftists coming past with raised fingers and I envisioned the crowd parting, a co2 cannon becoming visible and when fired four rolls worth of wet toilet paper plastering the side of their car or through the open window. In my mind the look on their faces are priceless.

Marine flags really do add another perspective to Walter Reed.

Hope the wind dies down for future Fridays. It was kinda getting tough on the forearm holding the flag pole. Popeye I am not.

Thanks for the prompt AAR.

There are no words. I only have tears of gratitude for the way you guys have been so faithful. I thank God for each one of you. I am growing sad just thinking about you all not being there on Friday nights. You have been good for my soul too. z can’t get away to travel any distance because I have so many obligations that tie me down, both at home and work. It lifts my spirits to know that you guys are there doing the job that I want to do and can’t. So thank you, all of you, who have been so dedicated to our wounded warriors. On behalf of my husband, Semper Fi.

Semper Fi

And on behalf of the DC Chapter, thank you for your kind words.

The Quakers are still in Olney just 15 miles up Georgia Avenue from Walter Reed. I will have to get back into writing the AARs for Olney to give you something to read. I hope that I can be as prompt as Kburi in writing them.

Troop, did you see where several members of the Tea Party Caucus are going to camp on Reid’s Senate steps until he sends them the Senate version of an extended budget bill? I think they are going to need some foot soldiers to help with that task. Personally I think that the TP members should be rotating in and out of D.C. all the time. If we don’t hold their feet to the fire, the congress critters will begin to slide into the D.C. sludge. I really hate this old age stuff. There was a time when i went wherever I pleased and distance was no object. All I can do now is call and write and vote, but I sure would love to be up there causing trouble.

Pls note this excerpt:

“On Thursday, March 31, 2011, Tea Party Patriots will be holding a Continuing Revolution Rally on the East Side of the Capitol Building from noon to 1:30pm. While the Congress continues “business-as-usual” with their short term continuing resolutions, we will be there to Continue our Tea Party Revolution and demand they make the tough decisions we sent them there to make.”

The location has changed to the north side.

Several of us will be joining the event. And on April 6, Americans For Properity will rally at 12 noon at the Capital.

So there is an effort to stay visible, but don’t expect to see it in the press.

An update: Several hundred tea party patriots gathered today on a chilly, damp day.

At least 4 Freepers rongkirby, tammycat, W04Man and myself.

Speakers were first team: Mike Pence, Steve King, Joe Walsh, Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, Michelle Bachman, Allen West and - believe it or not - Dick Morris, who closed the event with 15 minutes of nonstop attacks on senior dems, the budget and obama.

Plus Griff Jenkins, O’Reilly’s TV attack man against corrupt libs. Talked with him.

A lot of TV cameras were rolling, maybe you will see some of it on CSPN or CNN.

All in all, a very good rally.

Thanks for going and reporting.

I heard that a contingent of Tea Party members will be there till the budget is voted on. Did you get their schedule?

I saw that report and was only half listening. I didn’t realize it was the Tea Party Caucus that had organized the Tea Party event. The way it sounded yesterday, I thought it was just the caucus that was going to camp on Reid’s steps. Happy to see that there is going to be Tea Party folks helping. That’s what we have to do; keep on the pressure.

I haven’t heard of an annual Tea Party Tax day here in sleepy little Lake Jackson Texas, but I assume there will be one close to us in HOUSTON! I will attend that, plus ATLAS SHRUGGED will be shown in Houston theaters that day! I plan to go to the one in Sugarland.
