Anyone find the contradictory humor in a shooting on board a nuclear submarine called Astute? Besides me of course....

I know that Navy humour is such that the Astute is likely to be referred to as the Ashoot or Weshoot by other sailors, much as the USS Forrestall became known as the USS Forest Fire following the 1968 fire and explosions that followed the launch of a Zuni rocket from future Senator John McCain's aircraft that resulted in the deaths of 134 sailers and several hundred variously injured.

Not real funny to those aboard or to the families of the victims, but that's how it is.

Seriously, I cringe every time I drive through the gate and see the gate guards / guardettes wearing body armor, kevlar helmets and an M-9 strapped to their hips.

They're likely thinking about the guards at the CIA building at Langley who were shot down in 1993 by peaceful Islamic murderer Ahmed Kasi with an AK47 while the guards were armed with .38 revolvers and clipboards.

Are the Brits allowing women on their subs already? Must be a bunch of sub racing going on these days!

Mayor of Southampton Carol Cunio was one of several dignitaries on board HMS Astute during the double shooting. Which doesn't seem to have been related, but who knows?

My prediction: the dead guys name was Mohammed. So of course it wasn’t terror-related.

There was a shouting argument about Ollie's oak bar.

Actually, I was thinking more of Dame Agatha Chumley from the old Magnum, P.I. T.V. series.

The *third world* United States Navy operated Diesel boats until the retirement of the USS Dolphin AGSS 555, first laid down in 1962, commissioned on August 17, 1968, until its retirement in 2007. Last I heard, it held the records for both the deepest dive by a U.S. sub and the deepest underwater firing of a torpedo, as well as racking up over 1500 dives during its career.

I don't reckon you know what these are.

Don’t really care, to tell you the truth. Most diesels today are third world. I’m not knocking them, but 2007 is 2007, not 2011.

via BBC:
"The BBC understands that the leader of Southampton City Council Royston Smith helped to disarm the gunman. . .Eleven children were on the quayside at the time of the shooting and were due to board the submarine."
& via The Times Row over lavatory ‘triggered sub shooting’:
"A row over a lavatory triggered a shooting on board Britain’s newest nuclear submarine which left one Royal Navy officer dead and another critically injured, it was claimed tonight. The shooting took place just after midday as a party of civic dignitaries was visiting HMS Astute which is moored in Southampton’s Eastern Dockyard. An able seaman guarding access to the submarine’s control room was said by sources to have fired the shots shortly after he was replaced on duty at midday. The submariner was tonight under arrest on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The incident during which as many as six shots are believed to have been fired took place as the Mayor of Southampton Carol Cunio and the leader of the city council Royston Smith were being given a guided tour."

Royston Smith is ex-RAF and a Conservative MP.

They were going to have to row out to the loo, and got in an argument about the oars?

They're not oars, mate, they're me wife and sister!

The new class of diesel subs are not like the old WWII, things, maybe you should read about them.
