WASHINGTON – Perilously close to a government shutdown, President Barack Obama and congressional leaders forged agreement late Friday night on a deal to cut more than $37 billion in federal spending and avert the first closure in 15 years.

Obama hailed the deal as "the biggest annual spending cut in history," and House Speaker John Boehner said that over the next decade it would cut government spending by $500 billion.

"This is historic, what we've done," said the third man in the talks, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

They “cut” $37B so this budget will be $231B larger than last year’s budget. In this case a “cut” mean growing the budget by 6.5%.

You aren't going to get a "GOP budget".

You most certainly are. We've got a full budget process ahead...the GOP managed to get cuts here without even a budget process.

Here's what they're saying on DU:

"Actually, We started at $6b in the Senate and they at $31b... Looks like it settled north of $36b, so we gave them 110%"

LOL...there is not ONE positive comment on this deal over on DU. They are angry that ANYTHING got cut.

I agree with you. Not happy with this deal but it’s sure much better than Newt got in 1995 by picking a fight he wasnt ready for, or understood

Liberals are all whining on MSNBC extra two hours live. LOL

The expected deficit over the next 10 years is 20....that’s right $20,000,000,000,000 Trillion dollars. They expect to ratchet it down sharply to $19,999,999,600,000. Now that is some fancy cutting!!!!!!

They managed to get some cuts on what should have been a Dem budget...we'll see what they do with the Ryan plan.

Well stated, which gives me hope for the future. In this plan, monetarily, we got 78% of what we asked for. If we can get 78% of the Ryan bill through in 2012, that will be a major victory, leaving the door wide open for more in 2013.

No, Preamble, the American people do NOT see through the Democrat (Communist) lies. Just talk to the average dummy on the street. Klipklop almost WON in Minnesota! I’m sad that Boehner is Speaker. We need a sophisticated fighter and a teacher. Someone not gullible. (”When are the Democrats going to get serious about cutting spending?” he asked tonight.) Mind-numbing naivete!

Correct!

(Even though the usual purist Whiners here will complain about it.)

You’re right. This is a joke. Billions?

They should be talking trillions.

Not defending the GOP on this but I'm still wait and see at this point. PP funding didn't happen overnight and wont be brought down in one stroke. Hopefully this is the first shot. Name one time or Congress/Administration that got this close to bringing it down. Not even under President Reagan. They ( the GOP ) better keep swinging.

A little theater to create the illusion there’s a significant difference between the two parties but, in the end, the results prove otherwise. It makes me angry thinking about all the time and money good, well-intentioned people have given to the GOP only to be forked over. At some point you can’t get mad at the establishment GOP for playing you because you’re only playing yourself. It becomes more obvious by the month. Don’t give these thieves another cent and maybe you’ll start seeing some results?

And is it torqued his jaws to say it.

I noticed that too. Whenever he is happy, Obama goes into a all the details. In this case, he just said it was the biggest budget cut, and when into the details of how a Colorado class could see the Washington monument. I was in histerics.

I question whether we should gauge progress by the rantings of insane/stupid/evil people. Those fools would spend until everyone is starving, literally. And still no be satisfied.

Very excellent point.

Now we move onto a real GOP budget with the Ryan plan. If the GOP managed cuts here without even any hearings, they will end up with far more for Budget 2012.

ULtimately, they would have had to give in. The people are behind this...and showed it convincingly in 2010. We need to continue to force them to show their colors so that in 2012 the momentum builds even more.

The Emergency Powers are alredy there...and sadly, a large part of the government already operates under their mantle.

But funding is still in the hands of congress and it is one of the few places we can hurt them and force the issue.

whether we should gauge progress

Of course it should be used...not as the only gauge...but certainly a very effective one.

It always helps us when the loony left is incensed with Dear Leader.
