Many of you have watched committee hearings on your computers or on the Florida Channel on TV when gun rights bills are being heard.

We've had many, many calls and e-mails asking what is going on with the anti-gun activities of the Florida Sheriffs.

Pinellas County Sheriff Jim Coates did, in fact, tell legislators that if the concealed weapons license reform bill (SB 234 and HB 517) passed that law enforcement would be "drawing down" on license holders.  More than one tape of him making that statement can be found on youtube.com

To view Sheriff Coats’ comments to the committee on youtube.com click hereClick here to view an article in the St. Petersburg Times that reported on the conduct of Sheriffs and Deputies in a recent committee hearing where they lobbied against gun owners.

Excerpt:

"Law enforcement is going to start drawing their weapons and challenging these individuals, and something bad may very well happen," Coats testified. "I just ask that you take that into consideration."

And finally, an article by the Florida Open Carry group appears online at AMMOLAND.com that addresses these issues with candor.  The article is candid and revealing.  If you are at all concerned about the anti-gun owner activities by these sheriffs, the Youtube video and the two articles should answer your questions.

Check the last link. I should have copied it. IIRC, the Florida Sheriffs Association said they preferred open carry when they were debating concealed carry in the late 1980s.

St petersburg has a significant area that is quite dangerous to go to especially after dark. There aren’t many legal concealed weapons there.

This sheriff is part of a long line of corrupt and incompetent sheriffs of that town.

I would ask him to take into consideration an entirely new field of work.

Seriously.- If the primary response of LEO officials is to start drawing on legal activity I would be concerned in an entirely different direction, namely that of protecting our lawful citizens from the Sheriffs.

and that is an entirely new thing under the Florida Sun.

Despite having never been arrested or even have received a speeding ticket the Hillsborough Country Sheriffs Dept made it very difficult for me to get my concealed carry permit. It took 5 trys for them to get my fingerprints on the background check card. That was 5 trips to the office.

Even then the State responded that the prints were unusable but by law they were limited in asking for another set of prints.

"Law enforcement is going to start drawing their weapons and challenging these individuals, and something bad may very well happen,"

When the rest of us do something knowing that "something bad may happen", the law says we're responsible for the consequences.

If some of you can’t believe that a Sheriff would say such an outrageous thing, here is the proof, a YouTube video of the debate in the Florida House of Representatives.

When I got my FL permit I went to a gun show and did one of those two hours classes. They did my prints for me. Sent ‘em in, no problem except this was back just after Obama was inaugurated so it took about 3 months to get to me.

I took a private class and at that time they were requiring everyone go to the sheriffs office. Imagine that, the sheriffs office couldn’t take proper fingerprints.

I’ve had it about 11 years and haven’t shot anyone, or even had an “accidental” discharge.

I’m going to a networking meeting tonight where there will be a lot of gunowners who carry. I’ll be sure to let them know the sheriffs attitude.

OK, Marion - ‘fess up! Tell us how much you had to pay that jackass-in-uniform to get him to say that on record?

We know you had to bribe him, ‘cause nobody would say such a thing unless well paid.

I forgot, make that “nobody outside of a locked ward”.

;-)

I must mention that a friend had fingerprints that were not readable, as seemingly yours are.

First, the electronic printing failed, then they did it woth ink. Tally refused all of them.

Once a second set of ink prints arrived, and was the same, Tally accepted that some people have unreadable prints.

His permit arrived soon thereafter.

Unfortunately, agency response depends of the particular ‘crat. All ‘crats are not equal. Some are much more officious than others.

“I’ve had it about 11 years and haven’t shot anyone, or even had an “accidental” discharge.”

But, just because it has not yet happened means nothing!

It could happen!

Guns are dangerous. Send them to me for safe disposal.

;-)

Up here in the Panhandle I bet they’d have been just fine doing my fingerprints - in fact now that I remember my husband had his done at the local sheriff’s for a renewal (we had just moved in from out of state, so he was renewing his out of state license as an in state license) and they did them just fine. Again this is more recent than your experience.

I would but I lost them all in a terrible fishing accident.

When a LE runs your plates the computer system will show you have a concealed weapons permit. So are they going to start shooting on sight?

Yep.
ANY interaction with the po-po can lead to their “drawing down”. I keep that in mind, constantly.
