US Republican Senator John McCain gives a press conference in the Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi. McCain on Friday urged the international community to arm and recognise the rebel Transitional National Council as the "legitimate voice" of the Libyan people. (AFP/Marwan Naamani)

The allegation was that he was taking his wife to sex clubs. Implicit in that is the allegation of wife-swapping. At least that's how I read it from afar.

Looking over the old CNN story, I found this gem:

One Republican, Rep. Ray LaHood, had even called for Ryan to withdraw from the race.

Shocker.

I know specifically what the allegation is, but I’ll not dignify it by repeating it here. As for LaThug, his role behind the scenes was considerable. The RINO enforcer for the Combine. He spent most of his time kneecapping Sen. Fitzgerald and can claim no small credit for running that excellent Reformist out of office. Of course, his reward was the Cabinet post from Emperor Zero. Without LaThug’s help, Zero would still be a pissant state legislature with nary an accomplishment to his name (whatever his name really is).

Keyes was set up to lose, pick a guy from out of state with a “hard right” reputation, don’t support him, and then watch him lose huge. (69.97% to 27.05%)

Then claim this as proof that “a conservative can’t win”. Keyes should have been smart enough to refuse their invitation to run but he wasn’t.

I voted for Romney too. It was before I learned out how hard he sucked.

But like you say there were no choices. Fred Thompson was the only decent candidate on the ballot, and he’d already dropped out of the race.

The lady considered as a candidate with Keyes was Dr. Andrea Barthwell who had a minor post in the HW Bush administration. I believe she is RINO but at least she lived in the state for years.

The replacement for Ryan should have been State Sen Rauschenberger who placed third in the primary after Ryan and super loser Jim Oberdouche.

I liked Jack Ryan, poor guy, maybe the only politician in history brought down by a sex scandal involving his own wife. I wonder what he’s doing now.

He probably left the state like Fitzgerald. Our candidate for Cook County Board President last year recently fled to Texas.

>> The lady considered as a candidate with Keyes was Dr. Andrea Barthwell who had a minor post in the HW Bush administration. I believe she is RINO but at least she lived in the state for years. << Yeah, when the two "finalists" announced were Keyes and Barthwell, I had a major "wtf?!" moment and I'm sure most of the GOP base did as well. The only thing they had in common is both were black (yeah, play the race card like the Dems, that'll work) Someone who never lived in Ilinois vs. uber-RINO. Naturally, we went with the out-of-state conservative as the only option. And thus began the "conservatives gave us Keyes" myth.

>> The replacement for Ryan should have been State Sen Rauschenberger who placed third in the primary after Ryan and super loser Jim Oberdouche. <<

I wasted alot of time getting excited about Dikta's "potential" candidacy (I think most of us did), but by the time a month had gone by with no replacement, it was pretty clear Obama had it in the bag. At that point, I just suggested "moderate Republican" General John Borling (who came in 5th in the primary) as the sacrifical lamb. He'd run a respectable campaign that would at least force Obama to stick to his own race, and Borling wouldn't have been a factor in future races. Instead, we had to pick between Keyes and Barthwell, and the rest was history.

It's amusing how the people who insist Oberweis "shoulda been nominated" will swear to this day that they ONLY supported him because he had the most money and was polling best, and claim that fandom for Oberweis is NEVER a factor in him finishing 2nd place all the time. Oberweis, despite never having any type of political record, elected or appointed, is now a state central committeeman in the IL GOP. That's the second highest position in the party after chairman, as the 19 committeemen make all the decisions for the state party by weighted vote (in many cases, you could argue Oberweis has even more clout than the chairman since he represents a safe GOP heavy district and thus carries a huge percentage of the weighted vote). I guess the "Oberweis wuz wobbed" folks would have us believe he got that post simply because he walked into the state party office one day, gave a speech, and wowed them with such incredible abilities to the point where they filled the slot immediately and offered him the job. After all, he has NO fans left in the state GOP, right? ;-)

>> I liked Jack Ryan, poor guy, maybe the only politician in history brought down by a sex scandal involving his own wife. I wonder what he’s doing now. He probably left the state like Fitzgerald. Our candidate for Cook County Board President last year recently fled to Texas.

Last I heard, Jack Ryan donated $2000 to Eric Wallace in the 2010 primary for U.S. Senate, before Wallace was hounded out of the race by conservative "leaders" who proclaimed Patrick Hughes was "more credible" (aren't we glad we listened to these "leaders" in 2010, unlike 2006 where we didn't the buy the "Oberweis is the only acceptable conservative" claims?) So I'm guessing Jack Ryan is still living in Illinois.

I must admit things look pretty bleak now though. I think all wings of the IL GOP (except combiners like Kirk and Topinka) are proven losers... that goes for our squishy "moderates", and our "conservative leaders" who keep finding unknown zillionaires with no campaign skills. I must pledge guilty here as well, I supported Maria Rodriquez in the 8th district primary last year, and for a while I "wrote off" Joe Walsh as having no chance against Melissa Bean. He was one of the few bright spots and big upsets last year, and he's since proven to be one of best new tea party conservatives. You could make a credible case that Walsh has been the best of the five new GOP freshmen from Illinois, period.

Without LaThug’s help, Zero would still be a pissant state legislature with nary an accomplishment to his name <<

I think my proudest political moment was my 2006 grassroots effort against LaThug's "exploratory" committee for Governor. It caused considerable buzz (and backlash against LaThug once I exposed his record of destroying every decent conservative reformer), and the next thing you know, LaThug said he was putting his campaign "on hold" in case Jim Edgar announced. Edgar never ran, but that was the last we heard of the cowardly LaThug. Then his tried to get LaThug Jr. elected States Attorney for Peoria county, and we derailed that as well.

LaThug didn't even try to hide his support for Obama behind the scenes, he quite openly and publicly appeared at "bipartisan events" with Hussein on the campaign trail, and talked up Obama to the media and voters throughout the 2004 and 2008 campaigns. He was quick to silence any Illinois official who did criticize Obama. His reward was the cabinet post, and now LaThug Jr., despite having no track record, was appointed to the state legislature by the combine over two far more qualified candidates, including the mayor of Peoria! Obviously we can see how these guys cling to power, and it is spite of how the electorate votes.

Pat Quinn's been a horrible Governor (even worse considering he had potential to be one of the few decent RATs), but LaThug is a rare example of someone who would have probably been even worse. Quinn sold his soul to the combine, but LaThug IS the combine. He would have been George Ryan on steroids, with the ethics of Al Capone sprinkled in for good measure. I shiver to think what's going on at DOT under his watch.

Here’s a particularly amusing piece:

Sure, he didn’t. And Der Führer of Germany played no part in the holocaust, either!
