(Reuters) - A woman has been mauled to death by a pack of four pit bulls in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, authorities said on Monday.

Margaret Salcedo, 48, was walking alone when the dogs, which had escaped from a fenced yard at a private home, attacked her at an intersection on Sunday afternoon, Truth or Consequences Police Chief Patrick Gallagher said.

Absolutely. I was not targeting the breed at all.

I own a large and/or (in this case AND) aggressive breed of dog; a Bull Mastiff.

She and her mom broke out of my brothers yard when I was visiting him last month and were running loose.

She does have a prior history of aggression against small dogs and (if they get in her way) the people who own them.

I try really hard not to have an unreasonable expectation of gentleness from her - and for the unsecured facility I blame my brother and his unreasonable expectations.

But other than that I was 4/4 of my own criteria!!!!!

And if those two hunted down and were violent to a person and/or a dog - I would think criminal charges and legal liability would be fully justified.

It isn't the breed. It is the type of person who thinks having four big mean dogs in a yard not sufficient to hold them, four big mean dogs who once loose would be on the prowl for blood - is a really cool thing and nothing to be worried about.

With four of them I suspect that the dogs NEVER got out and about unless they broke out. When the only avenue for fun and excitement is breaking out - guess what is mission #1 for the dog?

There was a report on a local radio station last week that a pit bull in our area was killed by a deputy sheriff after the officer went to investigate complaints by neighbors.

They are dangerous animals to own and should be allowed to be killed by anyone threatened by them if they stray from their own property or if not kept in control by the owners.

I gotcha. One of the coolest dogs I ever met was a bull mastiff named Music Man. Of course, he was being shown (I think he may have been number one at the time). He was awesome, very sweet and what a beautiful boy. A little too much dog for me, sizewise tho.
And yeah, dogs are a big responsibility, lots of people ought not. They get them for the wrong reasons, they toss them in the back yard, don’t socialize them, etc. Fortunately for me, if my golden did get out (can’t happen here as I don’t have a yard so she’s never out without me—but just supposing) she would not bite. But you know, she could jump up and knock someone down. And since we live in an area with lots of elderly they could get hurt. And guess what? My responsibility.
I just wish there weren’t so many stupid people who think it’s cool to have a mean or mean looking dog. It used to be GSD, then Dobies, then Rotties, now Pits.

There is one halfway rational use for pit bulls and one only i.e. hog hunting, and that does not go on in or around urban or suburban areas. Nobody should tolerate some a****** neighbor wanting to keep pit bulls in urban or suburban areas.

Why shouldn’t you be able to kill any dog that threatens your life? Why just pit bulls? Or am I misunderstanding and this is what you’re saying?

Wendy, Wendy. I am afraid you are overreacting here. What are the lives of a few people: kids, old ladies, mail carriers etc., when held up against the hours of pleasure this wonderful, warm, and friendly breed gives in the few short periods during which their owners are not incarcerated?

As our President might, think of these losses, tragic as they may seem on an individual basis, as an investment. I am honored to be the President of a not-for-profit .org that seeks Pit Bull Reform. It's all about love, Wendy.

When the owners of pit bulls are incarcerated, we think they should be able to share their cells with their beloved pets, especially if they own 2 or 3. Occasionally none of the occupants of the cell, human or canine can be fed, as prison budgets are tight these days. The pit bulls will manage, which is the important thing.

Crumbs...He died?

While I didn’t like him, I certainly did not wish such an awful thing on him…maybe.

Please fill me in. Was he eaten by a pit bull?

I thought the monitors fired him.

Joe, are you always so general about what you think? Because a few, very few, pit bulls have bitten people you believe ALL should be put to death or placed in captivity? How far would you like to take that? I’m not even a big fan of pit bulls, but your comment is a big overreaction even to the death of this poor individual. You don’t kill all of anything because less than 1% have been involved in a serious biting incident. You see?

The hype about Pit Bulls is just that, hype. There is a large population of Pit Bulls but as a percentage of their population they bite and kill less than many other large dogs. Take a look.

Other dog populations (United States):

(estimation) Pit Bulls: 5,256,000

(estimation) Rottweilers: 900,000

(estimation) German Shepherds: 780,000

(estimation) Chows: 240,000

Fatal attacks by these breeds of dogs (1979-1998):

Pit Bulls: 66

Rottweilers: 39

German Shepherds: 17

Chows: 8

When we divide the population by the fatal attacks, we can get a percentage based on the dogs probability of fatally attacking a human.

Pit Bulls: .00125 %

Rottweilers: .00433 %

German Shepherds: .00217%

Chow: .00333%

This is just another "Real World" reason to carry a firearm on your body ...not in a drawer in the den or the glove compartment of your car.........

This happened on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.....enjoying life....minding her own business....with an expected 20 to 30 year more average life expectancy........Chewed to death on a street corner by a pack of pit bulls.......

BTW...in rural Pulaski Co. we shoot loose pitbulls on site as if it were a Rattlesnake under a merry-go-round.
