NEW YORK (Reuters) President Barack Obama on Wednesday accused Republicans of using their cost-cutting proposals to push a vision of a "shrunken America" as he sought to rally supporters on a re-election fundraising drive in New York.
At a trio of events aimed at rekindling the enthusiasm of his 2008 presidential campaign, Obama touted his economic policies and budget plan and urged Republicans to engage in a "serious debate" on tackling the nation's debt and deficits.
But even as he tried to reconnect with his party's base, he acknowledged that many Americans remained frustrated by tough economic conditions and that more needed to be done.
"We've got a lot of work to do to continue to lower the unemployment rate and grow the economy," Obama said.
He also weighed in on the battle in Washington over how to rein in the federal deficit, which is projected to hit $1.4 trillion this fiscal year. The issue has risen to the top of the agenda for the 2012 presidential campaign.
Obama has used the first steps in his re-election effort to promote a budget ideology that is at odds with the fiscal views of Republicans who are planning presidential campaigns and accuse him of wasteful spending.
He wants to raise taxes on wealthier Americans to fund social programs while making some budget cuts, a plan he says would bring deficits down by $4 trillion over 12 years.

Obama's Magic Math....
Better shrunken than totally collapsed. Obama may claim there’s another option, but there isn’t one.
Back in the 60’s they used to sell a lot of those little shrunken heads....The actually looked quite a bit like Barry.
I suspect life may soon imitate art.
The government is not America. The people are.
Obama new campaign slogan:
Shrunken Dollar Doctor
A shrunken government leads to a powerful, prosperous, exceptional, truly free America.
...government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.
—President Ronald Wilson Reagan
As he tells us to eat less,
drive smaller cars,
travel less,
get less healthcare (maybe you should take the pain pill)
etc etc,,
He tells us once a week a way we need to downsize our life,,
Those words are as true today as they were then.
The only shrinkage that I see is your failing Presidency Obummer.
Indeed they are.
In my estimation, President Reagan's aphorism is an eternal, unalterable, universal, axiomatic truth. Anyone running for elected office at any level that doesn't fully embrace that truth isn't worth an iota of consideration by American Patriots.
Barry’s vision of a “shrunken head America” is a little worrisome too.
If the press wrote accurate headlines, it would read:
Republicans assail Obama’s ‘shrunken America’
and he pushes hope and change I have no hope and I got no change
so there we are even!
Government should shrink and private prosperity will grow.
The headline should read: “Obama shrinks America. Conservatives want to shrink government.”
Barack Obama: Last of the Big Spenders
And he's the one to do it as evidenced by the rousing "success" in his first 2.5 years!
After telling us it wasn't coming, when we could already see it on Main Street, Bernanke warns of "transitory" inflation (up from 2.1% to 2.8%) and lower than expected growth (3.1-3.3% from 3.4-3.9%).
The lower 3.1% growth isn't enough to get people back to work yet somehow he expects unemployment to be a half point lower than forecast in January when he was predicting MORE growth and LESS inflation. I've only read press accounts so this part puzzles me.
On the upside, asked about oil prices, Bernanke said the Fed doesn't have the power to increase oil supply. That tells us that he believes increased supply will help. Who has the power the increase (or even threaten) to increase supply? Obama.
Obama won't do it. He'll lie to our faces about drilling, permits, moratoriums, regulatory impediments. "Just make stuff up" as he famously accused Wednesday.
He feels inauthentic, incapable of "feeling our pain" like Clinton or having "compassion" like W. The pain of high gas prices works for him. Not only is it an opportunity to further the "Big Green" agenda of his allies but, at its core, a once free people becomes more malleable when beaten down by hard times.
He mocks, scolds then rushes off to golf, to a celebrity gig, holiday or fundraise because he doesn't have time for "distractions." Fellow travelers and an awed "free press" herd the unaware to the cliffside and drag us over with them.
better for the gov.t to be fit & trim & the economy growing muscle mass.
let the big spenders go on a low cash diet, stick with a budget, tighten the belt, shrink the bloated belly.
