48 women raped every hour in Congo, new study shows, far surpassing previous estimates

The central African nation of Congo has been called the worst place on earth to be a woman. A new study released Wednesday shows it's even worse than previously thought: 1,152 women are raped every day, a rate equal to 48 per hour.

That rate is 26 times more than the previous estimate of 16,000 rapes reported in one year by the United Nations.

Michelle Hindin, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health who specializes in gender-based violence, said the rate could be even higher. The source of the data, she noted, is a survey that was conducted through face-to-face interviews, and people are not always forthcoming about the violence they have suffered when talking to strangers.

"The numbers are astounding," she said.

Congo — a nation of 70 million people that is equal in size to Western Europe — has been plagued by decades of war. Its vast forests are rife with militias that have systematically used rape to destroy communities.

You would think that after a few days of this they would figure a way to avoid it.

Some of them anyway.

I'd guess a computer model. They probably could have carried it out to 7 decimal places.

GIGO.

Sounds like they got a problem- that does not need any American money to solve, so don’t ask for any.

Ah, more news from subsaharan Africa.

The “mother country” the “Rev.” Jeremiah Wright makes reference to in his Afrocentric “sermons”.

Jen, Kisha, in addition to the One Million dollars, the Amazing Race is going to send both of you to the Congo, where 416,000 women are raped every year.
OK, maybe no more than 415,000 tops, I swear.

If I was a female on this site,
I'd find some of the comments here
...Insensitive.

The article indicates that the rapes are
acts of roving militias, essentially acts of war.

Just more feminist statisticians pulling numbers out of their hinny. No way that this has any relation to reality and is kind of the opposite of the other made up number that only 2% of rape claims are false (hint: try more like 50-60%).

They do seem to like to use rape as a lever in order to get the US/West military involved in something that we have no reason to be involved. Kosovo was another good example of that, day after day it seemed you had an endless parade of young good looking Albanian (Muslim) women crying on the camera that those horrid Serbs had gang raped them before buying them a ticket out of Kosovo. Certainly worked in that case, bombed a long time friend so that the Muslims could take over and turn Kosovo into a narco/terrorist state that deals in drugs, terror and prostitution (white slavery). Oh and we’re still stuck with troops there to make sure the last of the Serbs don’t have any way to defend themselves from Muslim attacks on churches and villages.
