IRS investigating donors to political nonprofits

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service is investigating five donors for making contributions to the kind of nonprofit groups that have become popular for spending millions of dollars on political ads in the past few years.

The IRS is trying to determine whether the donors owe federal gift taxes for the donations, an agency spokeswoman said Thursday.

The IRS did not name the donors or the nonprofit groups to which they contributed. But the agency's confirmation of an investigation could have a chilling effect on politically active groups that have become integral to campaigns for Congress and could play a big part in the 2012 presidential election.

If there’s any justice it should be the likes of Soros who is getting socked, and even that is distasteful to me on principle. But I bet they’re going after conservative billionaires.

Nixon Redux:
January 25, 1971: Colson Begins Compiling ‘Enemies List’ Nixon aide Charles Colson and Colson’s aide George Bell begin working on an “enemies list,” people and organizations the White House believes are inimical to President Nixon and his agenda (see June 27, 1973). The initial list includes a group of reporters who may have written favorably about Nixon and his actions in the past, but who cannot be trusted to continue, and a second group of reporters who are considered “definitely hostile.” A second list, from White House aide Tom Charles Huston, is staggeringly long, and includes, in historian Richard Reeves’s words, “most every man or woman who had ever said a discouraging word about Nixon.” A third list is made up of “enemy” organizations, including several left-of-center think tanks and foundations, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the AFL-CIO. [Reeves, 2001, pp. 297-298]

Can’t wait to see this list or orgs and donors.
Hope Congress is getting the Impeachment papers drawn up.

The most dangerous action any pol can take is to politicize the IRS.

One sure way to scare the public into silence. and if not they will destoy you.

This is an impeachable offense.

This is an impeachable offense.

But then congress would have to possess the balls to do that. We are really, truly, deeply in trouble

IIRC the Sierra Flub already changed to a 501(c)4 which makes contributions non-deductible by the contributor because they wanted to be able to lobby all levels of government with impunity.

But there are plenty of others out there that are low hanging fruit for the IRS if they'll just walk under a few more fruit trees and start pickin!!!

I doubt it based on the group quoted.

“Major donors to the new political organizations may have to pay a heavy premium for staying in the shadows,” said David Donnelly, national campaigns director of the Public Campaign Action Fund, a watchdog group. “It’s clear that the law says these secret political donors can’t have it both ways: If they choose to influence elections, they have to do it in the open or pay the taxman.”

Well, looks like Soros is involved. Tides is a funder of the Public Campaign Action Fund.

Yes we are in trouble. These are the same people that went after Nixon for the very same offenses they commit without a second thought.

Unless the American people stand up and say enough is enough votes everyone of these anti-Constitution pols out of office we are going to have DECADES of cleaning up the damage.

I agree, environmenatl “non profits” have billions in assets. That alone is taking money away from any species that need “protecting”, and is buying them tremendous power over the lives of Americans. In return, they are accountable to no one, no matter how much dmage they do.

I have a close acquaintance, who works mid-management for the IRS. Zero has that person's undivided political loyalty. That person regularly says Obama can do no wrong and "it's Bush's fault" for leaving Barry such a mess. I think such is the current manner of expressing one's bona fides within that organization, so as to seek to be rewarded with a promotion.

Well beyond scary!

Corruption is Barry's and the Left's middle name.

Yes if any person is best qualified as to how dangerous the IRS can be to individual freedom, it is the people on the inside.

This is the problem I think we have in all branches of Govt now. I think enough career people have seen the heavy hand of this Admin. The loyalty is from the survival instinct kicking in.
I bet Gates is heading for the exit fast now that he has pointed the finger of blame on all the leaks (op Geronimo)on the WH, starting with obamas Monday photo op.
