Netanyahu: Sorry to See Mitchell Go, PA Torpedoed Peace

The Palestinian Authority's refusal to negotiate with Israel is what led to the failure to reach a final status agreement, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told U.S. Special Middle East Envoy George Mitchell.

Netanyahu spoke with Mitchell by phone Saturday after learning that Mitchell had submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama.

The prime minister told Mitchell he was sorry to hear that he was resigning, and expressed his disappointment that PA officials refused to come to the negotiating table.

The PA leadership had “set countless preconditions that made [the envoy's] work difficult, and at the end of the process even united with Hamas,” the prime minister told Mitchell.

Did he go or was he pushed by Obama/Powell who may be preparing something even worse for Israel?

Moot question. Either answer leads to Obama is preparing something worse.

Nobody really expected anything less than this outcome anyway. I feel a little bad for Mitchell though as I consider him to be a genuinely good man.

Eleutheria5 I have a question for you if I may?

Is it possible for ANY palestinian leader to try to work a peace deal with Israel and NoT immediately become a dead man walking?

Shrug. There will never be peace in Israel until the Palestinian savages lay down their weapons and surrender.

I am not so sure he is good.

Who was slicker, Mitchell or was Darmin/Sununnu the real villans ( and too stupid by half ) that talked Bush the Elder into Mitchell's tax deal which broke his no new taxes pledge and gave us Clinton.

BTW, Dan Quayle said don't do it....

Which begs the next question, if Bush didn't go along with it and would have one a 2nd term, would he have gone after Bin Laden ( where are Clinton punted ) and would have 9/11 never happened ?

IMO, Mitchell was one of the most partisan rats ever. When he ran the Senate he was as bad as Harry Reid but with a better smile.

The Egypt events changed the situation. Makes no sense for the Palis to rush, much better for them to wait and see.

Problem is, you have on the one hand Arab SOP. Demand way way way more than you can ever realistically expect. On the other hand, the SOP when bargaining with Arabs is when they demand way way way more than they can ever realistically expect, get on your horse and start riding away, and then the Arab says, “wait! Perhaps my people will not disembowel me and hang me from a lamp post if you only give me way way more than I can ever realistically expect.” Then you’re supposed to keep riding, and he says, “wait! How about just way more than I can realistically expect?” Wave and say, “maa salaam yaa sadiiq.” Then he says, “Don’t go just yet. I haven’t changed my position, but perhaps we can talk man to man and come to an understanding.” But instead, we have had various POTUSes saying, “Don’t you dare ride away just because he’s demanded something ridiculous. Negotiate! Now! Concede more! I wanna photo op!” and then the SOP is “Oh, so you can’t ride away, huh! Now I really put the screws to you.” So not only aren’t the Palis a partner for piece, let along peace, but America has been more a hindrance than a help, because the POTUSes do not understand Middle Eastern bargaining procedures, and keep sabotaging it. If you aren’t willing to ride away, you get no respect, and if you are being ordered not to ride away, you get even less.
