Should America Declare Victory in the War On Terrorism?
Pinochet

Posted on 05/15/2011 9:38:50 AM PDT by pinochet

With the death of Osama, it is time for America to declare victory on the War on Terrorism. The main aim of the war on terrorism was to destroy Al Qaeda and kill Osama, just as World War Two aimed to destroy the Nazis and kill Hitler. Of course, mopping up operations should be carried out, to capture and kill remnants of Al Qaeda. But we do not want to see another endless war, similar to the so-called war on drugs, which will never come to an end.

The war on terrorism was used as an excuse to take away the civil liberties of the American people. Conservatives are usually firm defenders of the constitution. But under the Bush 43 administration, they were willing to ditch civil liberties, in order to feel safer. Conservatives were willing to tolerate government surveillance to a greater extent than at any time in American history. The Patriot Act had many unconstitutional provisions. Lots of government workers were hired to snoop on Americans.

Now that those unconstitutional powers are in the hands of Obama and his socialist crowd, some conservatives are having a hard time staying awake at night. It is time to stop harrassing little old ladies with tweezers, when they attempt to board planes in our airports.

While I agree with your first two points... exactly who is “They”? That is the whole problem that I have with this War on Terror. The enemy was never defined, therefore we don’t really know who we are fighting much less the criteria for winning.

"I declare 'Bankruptcy'!"

There! My debt problems are over!

Ok, actually, we should just end the war on terrorism and declare the authentic war against militant islam, wherever it exists.

Excuse me I wasn’t clear that I was referring to the general public, not myself. I would have been delighted with a declaration of war on Afghanistan immediately after 9/11. The Taliban regime was clearly an enemy for harboring Al Qaeda.

And WW2 was just an excuse to make people turn off all their lights every night.

America also led an effort to isolate Iran and Hezbollah in the 1980s.

And how is that working out over this past 10 years?

Every few years, America also helps the Philippines "defeat" the Moros, too...but they still need to be "defeated" or "destroyed again, a few years later.

I like George Bush, but I think he made one big mistake when he defined the War On Terror. It should have been The War On Islam. They are at war with us and were then.
