French Socialist politicians voiced outrage Tuesday at the parading of IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn handcuffed and unshaven in the United States before he has a chance to defend himself on charges of attempted rape.
Arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a chambermaid at a luxury New York hotel,Strauss-Kahn was made by police to walk manacled in front of cameras on his way to a courthouse, and his appearance before a judge was televised.
Former Culture Minister Jack Lang described the treatment of the Socialist presidential frontrunner--whose political career is now in tatters--as a "lynching" that had "provoked horror and aroused disgust."
The U.S. justice system,he said, was "politicized" and the judge appeared to have been determined to "make a Frenchman pay" by denying the head of the International Monetary Fund bail even though his lawyer had offered to post $1 million bond.
To many Americans, the handling of Strauss-Kahn reflected an egalitarian tradition that all crime suspects get the same treatment, regardless of their wealth or power.
Socialist Party leader Martine Aubry denounced "degrading images" and said France was lucky to have a law on the presumption of innocence that bars media from showing defendants in handcuffs before they are convicted.
Former Justice Minister Elisabeth Guigou, who drafted that law, called the pre-trial publicity "absolutely sickening."
"The power of these images of a Kahn who hasn't been allowed to shave, tired, and not dressed properly, all that offends human dignity,"she told Europe 1 radio.
Another respected former justice minister,Robert Badinter, who pushed through the abolition of the death penalty in France, said the IMF chief had been subjected to "death by media."
"Never forget it's not just judges that are elected, but prosecutors. And the chief of police is elected. And clearly,in public opinion,to exhibit a powerful rich man in the presence of a victim from a very poor background, electorally,it pays off."

I’m glad you clarified the facts because I, initially, thought that they were setting-this-guy-up. I was thinking, “how does a 62-year-old man, physically compel a thirty-something, young woman to submit to sexual abuse?”
IMHO the title of this article should read:
“French socialists attempt to deflect attention from the fact alleged attacker was their leading candidate”
I had a Strauss-Kahn and tossed it in the pooper. Danged thing never kept time.
Hey Frenchies, consider it payback for Ira Einhorn.
So keep your rear out of this Country and you won’t have this problem.

Point of order......
The tendency here is to always assume homogenity when it does not exist and to paint with a broad brush. The article does not say French, it says French Socialist Politicians. That would be the out of power French Socialist politicians.
It can be argued that the reason the man was arrested and the reason socialists are out of power is one and the same.
I don’t know but the point needs to be made
So, are the French going out on a Jihad?
DSK was just doing what the IMF has been doing for years, raping people.
The French are right on this one.
The “Perp Walk” is a disgrace.
What purpose does it serve? None, for either justice or the defendant.
It serves the prosecutor, the police and the media, above any other consideration, and can only serve to poison the jury pool.
If it were a Sharia thing, wouldn’t SHE be stoned to death in Times Square?
Socialists in France then, are the same as Socialists here, the rules don’t apply to THEM!!!
Given the “cuisine” at Rikers, I assume he’ll be having more fried baloney, green eggs and ham. Or is it fried baloney, eggs and green ham? I remember the French would not extradite the antiwar activist and murderer (and Earth Day founder) Ira Einhorn until the state authorities agreed not to seek the death penalty (Einhorn was convicted of brutally beating his girlfriend to death in Phila. and stuffing her body into a trunk in their apartment - the body was discovered when neighbors living below Einhorn complained of the smell and dripping liquid). Einhorn spent four years living in luxury in France (after 13 years in other countries in Europe) while the French debated the merits of turning his sorry self over to the barbarian US.
>> When aren’t the French outraged about something... screw them. <<
Apparently when someone gets raped.

Nice balance.
You’re right. We should revoke the First Amendment so the press cannot film wealthy and influential people being arrested.
Wow! “Frog”-marching, French-speaking, Guinean muslim, “Free Sh*t Army,” this post has been an edifying experience!
Strauss-Kahn also apparently tried to toss his in the pooper.
The French aren’t right about jack! It’s this clown’s apparent celebrity that attracted media attention. Perpetrators are walked from their jail cells to court, daily. That’s not an anomaly! The term “Frog-marched” is most appropriate in this case!
What’s disgusting and sickening is comparing lynching with being seen handcuffed and unkempt in a public courtroom. There is no damn comparison. Lynching has a specific connotation in America. Black Americans were hanged and left swinging for the color of their skin.
