I’m glad you clarified the facts because I, initially, thought that they were setting-this-guy-up. I was thinking, “how does a 62-year-old man, physically compel a thirty-something, young woman to submit to sexual abuse?”
IMHO the title of this article should read:
“French socialists attempt to deflect attention from the fact alleged attacker was their leading candidate”

The tendency here is to always assume homogenity when it does not exist and to paint with a broad brush. The article does not say French, it says French Socialist Politicians. That would be the out of power French Socialist politicians.
It can be argued that the reason the man was arrested and the reason socialists are out of power is one and the same.

I remember the French would not extradite the antiwar activist and murderer (and Earth Day founder) Ira Einhorn until the state authorities agreed not to seek the death penalty (Einhorn was convicted of brutally beating his girlfriend to death in Phila. and stuffing her body into a trunk in their apartment - the body was discovered when neighbors living below Einhorn complained of the smell and dripping liquid). Einhorn spent four years living in luxury in France (after 13 years in other countries in Europe) while the French debated the merits of turning his sorry self over to the barbarian US.

The French aren’t right about jack! It’s this clown’s apparent celebrity that attracted media attention. Perpetrators are walked from their jail cells to court, daily. That’s not an anomaly! The term “Frog-marched” is most appropriate in this case!
What’s disgusting and sickening is comparing lynching with being seen handcuffed and unkempt in a public courtroom. There is no damn comparison. Lynching has a specific connotation in America. Black Americans were hanged and left swinging for the color of their skin.
