Another Too-Fat-To-Fly Controversy Hits Southwest Airlines

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Southwest Airlines has apologized to a mother and daughter who said they got rough treatment at the airport.

Kenlie Tiggeman, a 30-year-old political strategist and weight loss blogger in New York City, said it was humiliating, being told she was too fat to fly, reports CBS 2’s John Slattery.

“It was rude. It was in front of lots of people,” said Tiggeman, who’s originally from New Orleans.

Tiggeman said the incident happened in Dallas over Easter. She and her mother were told by a gate agent they each had to purchase two seats.

“And said that we were, in fact, too fat to fly, without an additional ticket,” Tiggeman said.

I had some big, fat, SOB pouring over his seat and I had to lean at an angle for a 4-hour flight. My back was killing me due to that guy.

He also smelled terrible. Probably had to bathe with a rag on a stick. (seriously)

Fatties should not be offended when that are asked to pay for the two people riding in one body....

so the solution is that only TALL people should be comfortable?....

lets be real here.....ANY person of normal adult weight can not sit in regular coach with any ease...

the fact of the matter is that the average weight of the average American has increased over the last several decades yet the airlines...and stadiums,etc...have lagged behind in comfort...

She can’t fit.

I fly constantly.

I’m 5’11 and only 153. SKINNY.

These ass*hol# fat people think they have the right to my seat, and basically sit on top of me.

Why they think they get two seats and I get 0....drives me crazy.

How do these people completely ignore the impact they have on the other person whose seat they are taking up.

WHY IS IT HARD FOR THEM TO UNDERSTAND?!??!!?!?!

This is why people like me, in general, are physically disgusted by overweight people, and in general avoid them in any social situation at all costs.

They are some of the most rude, self-involved people ever.

Absolutely concur. And while I don't "Luv" SWA, they are about as good as it gets for a domestic carrier. Remember the story several months back where the pilot was taxiing out and turned back to the gate to remove a mother and her screaming, inconsolable child from the plane? That was SWA as well.

You see way too much humanity when you travel every week. Screaming kids, bad parents, people with cranial-rectal inversion, the clueless, the perpetually disorganized, and worst of all the seat kickers. All of this in addition to the TSA, which is a whole other group of symbolism-over-substance miscreants.

I saw her in a TV interview and mostly found her to be rather whiney and unsympathetic. Also, looking at her, I have a hard time believing her claim that she could fit in the 17” between the armrests, though she is clearly getting much closer than she once was to that goal.

I did think she made one good point, at the end of the interview I saw. She stated that 30% of Americans were obese and that many won’t fly because of this problem, and instead take long car trips that can cost more than flying, and that it would be good business to set aside a few rows with wider seats to accomodate heavy passengers. She also stated that it would make everyone happier. The heavy passengers would have room to sit and wouldn’t have to deal with the embarassment and the thinner passengers wouldn’t have heavy ones spilling over into their seats.

I would think that if an airline or two offered a small number of seats that were a few inches wider at a moderate premium (say 30%) it could create a competitive advantage, and be a financial success, while making passengers, both great and small, happier.

I don’t think the government should mandate anything like this, but I do think the airlines would be smart to respond to the market demand for wider seats for wider travelers.

You'd have the same problem because no one would admit they needed the larger seat, then they'd complain about being charged more.

Wide aisle, wide sofa seating, buffet meals...

I get up graded a lot. They take one look at me and move me
up to business or 1st. I’m not fat, just long and lean at
6’7”and 248 lbs.

Have you ever had the misfortune of sitting next to a tubber

Regularly, and they always want to lift the arm rest up so they can ooze in to my space. If I get there first, I just say no. If they're the first to sit, then the arm rest is already up and what's left of my seat tells me I'm in for a long flight. I fly SWA all the time and I absolutely support them in their demand that obese people purchase two seats.

OK ...

Delta, United, American, USAIR (been a while), continental/United.

You are right - not all airlines fly the same seat config. But, I have yet to encounter a 737-200 with wider seats.

If you look closely at that pic you posted, you’ll that person does NOT have a seat to their left. That is an EXIT row seat.

Some fatties are strong and quite agile — look at football linemen.

That guy just might be able to handle duties in an exit row.

But I dunno...

I waiting for the Media to interview the poor guys that have to sit next to these inconsiderate people.

You'll never see that because the Media always picks the victims for their stories.

Fat chicks are like Mo-Peds; they’re fun to ride but you wouldn’t want your friends to know you’re doing it...
