Perry’s Path to GOP Nomination Could be the Clearest

By Chris Stirewalt

Published May 27, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Maybe Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he’s decided to test the waters on a presidential run just because he’s feels left out.

For all the attention paid to the presidential possibilities of two members of the House (Paul Ryan and Michele Bachmann) and a reality show host (you know who), you’d never know that the Republicans had on their bench the three-term governor of the state with the nation’s best economy and the largest Republican population.

But for some reason, when Perry told people he wasn’t running, reporters believed him. If Chris Christie even flies over Iowa, the blogosphere goes into meltdown mode, but the political press for some reason mostly took Perry at his word.

It seems strange that they would have.

Perry, who has been governor for more than a decade, is a favorite of the Tea Party movement for his tough stands on state sovereignty, border security, taxes and gun rights. Anybody who packs heat when he jogs so he can blow away coyotes that mess with his Labrador retriever and hangs out with Ted Nugent at a Tax Day rally is going to have serious street cred with the Republican base.

As the Perry talk heats up, these primary election positives will be reinforced by liberals who find his Texas-fried politics to be repellant. Every time Democratic cable news talkers remind viewers that Perry once warned that Texas might secede from the union if Washington kept piling on new federal powers, somewhere in Iowa or South Carolina a Republican primary voter thinks, “Not bad.” When Perry gets chided for declining photo-ops with President Obama on visits to the state, somewhere in New Hampshire a guy...

Silly me, I got so caught up in their similarities that I thought they must like him. Of course, Poppy was for KBH wasn’t he?

With the timing though I have to think some people who wanted Daniels want Perry.

Yeah, Poppy Bush and Cheney campaigned for KBH, and W.’s silence in his old Lt. Gov.’s reelection was a tacit endorsement of KBH. The scuttlebutt is that the Bushes convinced KBH to run in an attempt to end Perry’s career.

IMO, and it’s ONLY my opinion, most Texas FReepers are lukewarm to Perry, at best. I like a lot of the things he says, especially to and about Obama, but I’m not sure he’s good POTUS material. Perry tends to be more RINO than conservative. But, he TALKS a good story.

Like any politician, it isn’t the WORDS, it’s the ACTIONS that speak the loudest. If you’re thinking about supporting Gov. Goodhair, do your research and make up your own mind. Don’t let the DBM pick your candidate for you.

I really think Perry would have a hard time winning. Guy is too easy to compare to Bush and that is not a good thing.

I keep trying to tell people that America just isn't going to elect another Texas governor any time soon. Half of them still have BDS, for cryin' out loud.

Perry attended (spoke at) the 2007 Bilderberg conf. in Turkey (one of only 2 Govs ever invited) (the other was SC. Gov. Mark Sanford) He's a globalist deluxe

That said, when is everyone going to realize there's only one political party yet many different political philosophies. The Elites will choose the person who best fills their needs.

>>It would make him a fatally weak leader at a time when we need a president with rock-solid conservative principles<<

Bingo! You are right on the money. Perry is a polished political slut.

He is in favor of the Trans-Texas corridor, essentially a superhighway for shipping goods from Mexico to Canada. On the surface, this may look appealing, but the hiccup comes when one realizes that Mexican ports will circumvent our own ports, offloading and trucking up through Mexico.

Not to mention the original TTC would have confiscated thousands of acres of Texans farm and ranch land utilizing eminent domain in order to build this superhighway integrating the Americas.

How bout the Spanish company that was awarded the contract to build the highway.

Oh, did I mention Perry is in favor of the Mexican trucker pilot program...yep! The ground work is in place for Mexican trucks to travel our highways.

Did I mention Perry has done jack diddley squat when it comes to border enforcement. Talks tough, but lethargic response to the out of control border. His main approach...blame the federal government.

Let's see, anyone remember Perry's lil pet project to force young school age girls to be vaccinated with the highly controversial drug Gardisil. Backed down when parents all across the state screamed bloody murder.

How’z bout Perry's promise to do something about sanctuary cities for illegals...then used his cronies to help kill the effort.

What about Perry's declaration that he was NOT interested in running for president, now, newly re-elected...guess what? He's testing the waters.

I dunno, these are just a few examples of why I think Perry's nothing but a slimy politician and part of the globalist establishment.

I am neither pro or con Perry, simply wanting to demonstrate that everyone posting from Texas is not so closed minded or adverse to honest discourse. A more germane question would be toward your ardent adversity to anything Perry. Again I would ask, can anyone show any Texas Governor who had a more conservitve result of their time in office? How long should we wait for any sensible comment confirmed?

You're still asking a trick/loaded question. Besides Perry, there have only been two other Republican Governors in Texas in the last 140 years, Bill Clements and George W. Bush.

Clements and Bush have many faults, but neither one of them as Governor went out and hit the election trail for a pro-abortion candidate in a recent Presidential election like Perry did, and neither of them pushed anything like the HPV vaccine or the TTC. That automatically puts them way ahead of Perry. Like Perry, they both had their own faults.

One thing Clements, Bush, and Perry do share in common as Governors, in addition to being the only Republican Governors since the 1870s, all three had friends who ended up richer thanks to their time in office. Of course that's a trend that the Democrats set over a century ago.

Too bad in Texas you do not have to resign to run for another office.

Your post is a lot of blather and misused English. (What is “ardent adversity”? How is one “adverse to honest discourse?” Since we were not discussing any “question,” why are you telling me about a “more germane question”?) You have switched topics. You lose.

Nobody really liked their 7th grade English teacher and any dismal point you wanted to fool us with is now lost in your retreat away from a discussion you were losing. Why would anyone think clarabell is just being contrary, thought that was someone else’s gig.

One last time..... PROVE you point, show us one Texas Governor who was more conservative than Perry, even with his mistaken toll roads and lil’ girl vaccine positions.

Come on, it doesn't help your point to make circular arguments.

Either Perry is the more Conservative or name one who was more Conservative. Simple question, which doesn't require four paragraphs to whitewash a reply.

Ok, I'll ask where you are going with “Governor went out and hit the election trail for a pro-abortion candidate in a recent Presidential election like Perry did”? Did Perry campaign for nobama, or did he do a more correct thing and promote the GOP nominee AND Palin?

All these paulistas need to take a big dose of reality, as hard as it may be to swallow, ronpaul has no more chance of being elected President than my old hound Hank. No amount of bashing everyone else is going to change that fact.

I am a Republican from Orange County Texas. We prefer Rick Perry to his Dem,ocrat opposition but that’s not saying much. One of the biggest issues where he angers a large amount of the Texas Republican base is his support for the “Trans-Texas Corridor”. The proposal as I understand it would be to take by eminent domain a swath of property from Mexico to Oklahoma and a private company would build a toll road on it. The private company has been alleged to be Spanish. He doesn’t go around campaigning for this dog, but he is known to be supporting it behind the scenes as has been alleged regarding the house speaker and killing conservative legislation.

even with his mistaken toll roads and lil’ girl vaccine positions.

Your attempt at trying to downplay a project that would have cost $150 billion or more and taken over half a million acres of land from Texans and that Perry worked on for the better part of a decade, and Perry thinking that he knows what's best for 12 year old girls doesn't work. All it does is show that you don't care what he's done.
