‘Weinergate’ (The Congressman keeps changing his story... was it a hack, or was it a prank?)
National Review ^ | 05/31/2011 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 05/31/2011 9:52:19 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Over the weekend I said that I suspect this will not end well for Congressman Weiner. I still think I’m right.

Rep.Weiner stands accused of sending a lewd picture to a young girl via Twitter. He says he didn’t do it. At first his office said his Twitter account was “hacked.” Now he says it was all a “prank.” This is an important change in language because to claim his account was hacked is to claim he was a victim of a crime. Meanwhile a prank is something he can wave away.

Meanwhile, the Left has been all over the place. They seem torn between wanting this all to go away and wanting to pin it on Andrew Breitbart or some other conservatives to be named later. That’s a problem because Breitbart et al. seem perfectly happy to have an investigation.

Meanwhile, the only person who wants to let the story die is Weiner, which suggests he’s the one who has done something wrong or knows something he doesn’t want others to know. Even some at Daily Kos realize this is a problem. And while the MSM seems perfectly inclined to follow Weiner’s lead, there are just too many other outlets that will not let go of the story.

I honestly have no idea what happened, but I do know that Anthony Weiner is exactly the kind of Democrat who would sensationalize a story like this if the politician involved was a Republican. And you can be sure the press wouldn’t have to be dragged kicking and screaming to cover it.

I don’t think this is a colossal scandal, but the selective standards of the MSM drive me crazy. Recall that the NY-26 race we’ve just finished analyzing was a result of the fact that a sitting congressman had to resign because he sent a picture of himself without shirt to a woman on Craigslist. In 2006, Nancy Pelosi used Mark Foley’s scandal to help win back the Congress.

And what if Weiner’s innocent and this is a dirty trick by some right-wingers? Don’t we need to know that? Shouldn’t they be exposed? (You know what I mean! Do you people have any idea how hard it is not to pepper this post with double entendre?)

At minimum, it seems to me that if the Left wants to claim Weiner was set up, then they are honor bound to support a full investigation.

my 22 and 16 yo daughters and i are all on twitter. it’s a fantastic way to follow sports, congregates all of the relevant material for you. one needn’t say a word about oneself on twitter, but can use it as an information-gathering device.
There are 10 yos who are far too adult for my taste. i don’t think one has to be hardened and wordly to be an adult.

Jonah Jonah Johan, you are forgetting to which party weener belongs.

There will be no consequences to his perverted behaviour.

Oh yes I agree I want to know what kind of awful person would send a photo of an obivious sexually excited man to a young college student using his account. If it were my daughter I’d want to know exactly who the prevent was who did this no matter who they are and I think it is serious enough that it is not a prank that should be overlooked.I don’t care how “small” Weiner thinks the “issue” is it is collassal to find out just who the pervent is.

The media outpets are being very selective on this - it’s very troubling.

But the story itself is a real hoot.

Weiner’s weiner!

All that remains is for the experts to come forward with proof that the photo was doctored. ha ha

UPDATE IV (4:10 p.m. ET): OK, now we have a very significant development: In March, porn star/stripper Ginger Lee boasted that she had received a Twitter direct message (DM) from Rep. Weiner.

She is a fan of Weiner, and raved that getting this private communication from the Democratic congressman was “like a DM from Buddha.”

This is what I believe lawyers would call “pattern evidence,” and if anybody in the major media thinks they can safely ignore this story much longer, they’re wrong.

UPDATE VIII: Weiner spokesman in an e-mail to the New York Daily News: “This is intended to be a distraction, and we’re not going to let it become one. Anthony’s accounts were obviously hacked. He doesn’t know the person named by the hacker, and we will be consulting on what steps to take next.”

RE: ‘I don’t think this is a colossal scandal.....”

Then what is it Jonah?...toe tapping wasn’t that big? A picture of a NY congressman with his shirt off wasn’t that big?

____________________________________________________________________________

far be it for me to defend Weiner ( whi I will NEVER vote for ). But in regards to this matter, it reminded me of an incident at work almost a decade ago...

In the early 2000’s I was working in a large company ( which will be unnamed).

I had a friend everyone knows as a sort of “fun” guy who like to crack jokes ( a lot of them were, what to call it -— off color ).

Once, he used his home e-mail to send a funny but lwed picture to all of his “buddy” office mates (including a few women who knew him and his personality). He made an mistake in his clicks of the address book and mistakenly included one HR lady in his mailing list.

She made a fuss out of it and decided to investigate by asking everyone on the list whether they were offended by the picture ( she personally was not offended but apparently had to follow rules ).

When everyone on the list (including the ladies on the list ) told her that they were NOT OFFENDED, the HR lady simply dropped the investigation.

That friend of mine had a close call.

Apparently the basis for filing charges was whether or not the recipient “felt offended”.

So, why am I telling you this?

If a recipient’s “feeling offended” is the basis for being charged with a crime or offense, then my guess is Weiner is probably off the hook. The recipient seemed NOT to feel any offense at all.

Jonah Goldberg is making a personal statement here. He seems to be saying that if he himself received the same lewd picture, it would not have been a big deal to him.

He’s a guilty little pervert. You can draw that conclusion from his arrogant attitude on TV.

Even poor Brett Favre's dikshots were ill-received.

A dong is like a squid. Yeah, it's good in certain circumstances, especially when well-prepared, but no one wants to see a picture of one on the menu
