Over the weekend I said that I suspect this will not end well for Congressman Weiner. I still think Im right.
Rep.Weiner stands accused of sending a lewd picture to a young girl via Twitter. He says he didnt do it. At first his office said his Twitter account was hacked. Now he says it was all a prank. This is an important change in language because to claim his account was hacked is to claim he was a victim of a crime. Meanwhile a prank is something he can wave away.
Meanwhile, the Left has been all over the place. They seem torn between wanting this all to go away and wanting to pin it on Andrew Breitbart or some other conservatives to be named later. Thats a problem because Breitbart et al. seem perfectly happy to have an investigation.
Meanwhile, the only person who wants to let the story die is Weiner, which suggests hes the one who has done something wrong or knows something he doesnt want others to know. Even some at Daily Kos realize this is a problem. And while the MSM seems perfectly inclined to follow Weiners lead, there are just too many other outlets that will not let go of the story.
I honestly have no idea what happened, but I do know that Anthony Weiner is exactly the kind of Democrat who would sensationalize a story like this if the politician involved was a Republican. And you can be sure the press wouldnt have to be dragged kicking and screaming to cover it.
I dont think this is a colossal scandal, but the selective standards of the MSM drive me crazy. Recall that the NY-26 race weve just finished analyzing was a result of the fact that a sitting congressman had to resign because he sent a picture of himself without shirt to a woman on Craigslist. In 2006, Nancy Pelosi used Mark Foleys scandal to help win back the Congress.
And what if Weiners innocent and this is a dirty trick by some right-wingers? Dont we need to know that? Shouldnt they be exposed? (You know what I mean! Do you people have any idea how hard it is not to pepper this post with double entendre?)
At minimum, it seems to me that if the Left wants to claim Weiner was set up, then they are honor bound to support a full investigation.
The reports say Rep. Weiner was “following” several young women on Twitter, which, as I understand it, means the young women were Tweeting.
Rofl! Post of the day!
i cannot speak to the young woman in question bc i don’t know her name or anything about her. i am telling you that it’s possible to be active on Twitter and to reveal zip zero nada about yourself or your daily life. I retweet DraftMarcoRubio tweets all the time, as well as Ken Cuccinelli’s etc.
Weinerweinerweinerweinerweiner...sorry...it’s just funny weinerweinerweinerweinerweiner
The women were likely tweeting. However, “following” an account on Twitter is just a mechanism to monitor whatever tweets are sent from the account. You can follow an account that doesn’t post any tweets.
I’m going to go with the obvious scenario: Rep. Weiner has been “following” a number of young women who were actively using Twitter, in the hope that he’d eventually work up enough nerve to send one of them a picture of his weiner, out of a pathetic hope that she might respond in a way he’d find titillating. So to speak.
(snicker)
OMG!! Was the Weiner hack a ChiCom attack???
Has Ubama placed our military (one of the best in the world, he tells us) on alert for a possible response to the Weiner crotch shot?
One can only imagine that as we speak, Ubama, Biden, Hillary and Panetta are giving the matter of finding Weiner's wiener the same kind of attention they gave to finding UBL.
He's a Democrat. Here's how Democrats treat sex scandals:
[Gerry] Studds was a central figure in the 1983 Congressional page sex scandal, when he and Representative Dan Crane were each separately censured by the House of Representatives for an inappropriate relationship with a congressional page in Studds' case, a 1983 homosexual relationship with a 17-year-old male. ... Studds defended his sexual involvement as a "consensual relationship with a young adult." Dean Hara, whom Studds married in 2004, said after Studds' death in 2006 that Studds had never been ashamed of the relationship. "This young man knew what he was doing," Hara said.[5] In testimony to investigators, the page described the relationship as consensual and not intimidating.[6] ... Studds received two standing ovations from supporters in his home district at his first town meeting following his congressional censure.[4]
Jonah's complaining about the the double-standards applied to in favor of Democrats and against Republicans.
We know how these things go down if the politician is an (R). He mentioned both the NY scandal that just flipped a seat and the "intern" scandal that helped propel Pelosi to House Speaker and also mentioned Weiner's penchant for hyping (R) scandals.
He further notes, if this was a "dirty trick" played by an ideologue opposed to the congressman, why aren't Weiner's allies demanding a thorough investigation?
If he did it, he should come clean and we can focus on the debt ceiling, the "soft patch" in Obama's economy, Libya and untold numbers of more important things.
If it was a staffer "prank" it's clearly an administrative issue. If it's a "cyber crime" that should be made clear. From the tone of her release, I got the sense the recipient was "reached out to" by Weiner's office. Any such contact should be investigated for ethics violations.
Tax-chick - I'm not sure everyone would agree with me, but if a married man of ANY age sent a photo of his "junk" to my daughter, I wouldn't care if she was 19,21, or 25 - I would be throwing a hissy fit big time! Adult or not - my child will always be my child, and therefore I will do what I need to protect them.
Oh, sorry, I pinged you before I saw you here! lol I should have known
Nicely done HG - post of the day for me!
My oldest daughter is in the military. I can’t protect her from weiner-wagglers, but she knows one if she sees one and can provide appropriate ridicule or an accidental boot to the groin, as needed in the situation.
I am not suggestion that Rep. Weiner’s (or, to be excessively fair, “someone’s”) action is anything but inappropriate, regardless of the recipient’s age. I simply think that calling a college-age woman a “young girl,” as if she’s in the 4th grade, is disingenuous. She wouldn’t be a “young girl” if she were getting married, running supply in Afghanistan, or plugging an Indonesian pirate. She’d be an adult woman, because she is.
My larger point was about the inconsistent way our society treats college students. We say they are adults, capable of taking care of themselves, deciding right and wrong, needing freedom from their parents. “We’re adults ... give us free condoms in our co-ed dorms.” But who’s paying the tuition, room, and board? I think we need a clear line: “Young girl,” needs protection from Rep. Weiner and that a-hole up the hall in the dorm, calls Daddy for bail money after she’s picked up drunk at a frat party. “Adult woman,” pays her own way and thinks about consequences before she acts.
Just philosophizin’, because it’s a hot day ...
You don’t have to go out on a limb. It is what happened to Chris Lee in NY-26.
I understand! But when they’re in Brunei or Thailand, all you can do is say, “Use a baseball bat, girl!” Anoreth had a whole crew of Brunei “Marine Police” wanting to move to Charlotte, where rents are low, women are independent, and bookstores stock Thomas Sowell texts. Raised that girl right, I did ;-).
His hacked story smells like a can of two day tuna left out in the sun.
You have every reason to be proud of your daughter as I am of mine. Mine graduated cum laude from a rigorous academic program at the u of Dallas a few weeks ago and starts her career tomorrow with a military support foundation. She wears Lilly Pulitzer not combat boots but she can take care of herself. Doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be disturbed by a wiener tweet.
