Summer job bummer: Teen unemployment 24 percent
CBS News ^ | June 4, 2011 | Bill Whitaker

The latest numbers show the unemployment rate stands at 9.1 percent, with the pace of job growth slowing. When it comes to new jobs, 70 percent of those are coming from small businesses, but many of them are struggling just to hang on.

Small businesses are often responsible for filling the summer job needs of America's teenagers. CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker reports that many 16- to 19-year-olds are finding the going rough when it comes to finding work once school is out.

Nearly 14 million Americans are looking for work

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate for those aged 16 to 19 last month was more than 24 percent. Compare that to May of 2000, when the rate was less than 13 percent.

Looking for summer employment has become a full-time job for 19-year-old Ana Galindo.

"I'm worried all the time. I'm worried because I have bills to pay," Galindo says.

She has filled out countless applications, but so far, the answer's been the same.

"At the moment we're not hiring, but we're just taking applications. We'll give you a call," prospective employers say.

Yet the phone never rings. College sophomore John Reed-Torres has been job hunting since last November. He says he's often competing with older workers and college grads for entry-level positions.

"People with Masters (degrees) trying to work at McDonald's. They're going to get hired before I do," Reed-Torres says.

And Connecticut just signed into a law a bill paying hourly workers for five days off a year. Can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t hire a teen for an hourly job under these current socialist conditions.

With 20+ Million illegal aliens in this Country - and a government without the desire to uphold the Constitution - this level of ‘unemployment’ amongst the US Citizens is not a big surprise.

A week ago I was on the Concord Trailways bus from Boston to Portland, ME. There were two young girls from Bulgaria on the bus aa well. They were about 20 years and were traveling to Old Orchard Beach for summer jobs in a large grocery store.

“People with Masters (degrees) trying to work at McDonald’s. They’re going to get hired before I do,” Reed-Torres says.”

This what you had years ago up in the Binghamton area of upstate NY. You had IBM retirees and layoffs working in the video stores, super markets, etc. Young people couldn’t find any work.

Who do they think they are fooling? Teenagers and college students don’t work any more. The college students are all traveling Europe on their government loans and the high school students just wouldn’t waste their time with anything as worthless as work.

Luckily, my granddaughter got a job in the summer recreation program. My grandson is going to work for us. Now if their mother could get a job things would be great.

There was a young man around here who was trying to get a custom meat cutting business started. They had him jumping through so many hoops he finally gave up.

We took our beef to the only guy around who butchers, it isn’t the most sanitary place around but he’s there to do the job and we are pretty sure the government doesn’t even know he exists as a butcher.

There are no signs that it is a place of business, you have to learn about him through word of mouth. He cuts it up in his garage. We had him do one a couple of years ago and it was fine.

Back in the day, everyone had their own meat cutting tools and you just did it out in the open but now we need the government to protect us.

Baby Boomers in your local government offices are getting paid (from federally funded programs, excessive property taxes, etc.), and many are working four days per week with no pay cuts (local government claims that energy is saved). Many counties have zoning ordinances against any small manufacturing starts, even on large, remote parcels. ...many other anti-competition regulations against new small business starts (land use regs., HOAs, NIMBYs, etc.) and many retired neighbors watchful against any productive activity.

We’ll generally see more activity after the end of the default process, when the nags are out of money.

I don’t think so, but even if they are, they will be canceled out by the 24-year-olds who are finally getting tired of playing Xbox in the basement, and those who along with their parents have been kicked out of their house because of foreclosures.
