WASHINGTON The Obama administration has intensified the American covert war in Yemen, exploiting a growing power vacuum in the country to strike at militant suspects with armed drones and fighter jets, according to American officials.
The acceleration of the American campaign in recent weeks comes amid a violent conflict in Yemen that has left the government in Sana, a United States ally, struggling to cling to power. Yemeni troops that had been battling militants linked to Al Qaeda in the south have been pulled back to the capital, and American officials see the strikes as one of the few options to keep the militants from consolidating power.
On Friday, American jets killed Abu Ali al-Harithi, a midlevel Qaeda operative, and several other militant suspects in a strike in southern Yemen. According to witnesses, four civilians were also killed in the airstrike. Weeks earlier, drone aircraft fired missiles aimed at Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who the United States government has tried to kill for more than a year. Mr. Awlaki survived.
The recent operations come after a nearly year-long pause in American airstrikes, which were halted amid concerns that poor intelligence had led to bungled missions and civilian deaths that were undercutting the goals of the secret campaign.

Blood-soaked and curiously and obscenely hugging his Nobel Peace Prize, nobama was maybe heard to say: I will kill you ALL!
Only reason I can think of.
to strike at militant suspects with armed drones and fighter jetsThis is according to unnamed American officials who can't keep their big traps shut.
Why don’t we just come out and admit we’ve started the crusades again and get on with it.
We have a war criminal in the White House. Not the rhetorical type that Code-Pink dreams up because official policy doesn’t square with their world view, but the real deal. There is already ample reason to impeach, convict, and relieve him of office at the very least. The only thing missing, albeit an important thing, are the congressional votes.
But nothing on Iran. The man is an Iranian plant.
lol. contrary to government protestations, it appears that we are at war with islam after all! :)
Where the hell is Congress??????????????????/
They're very busy e-mailing photos of their junk to random people. They don't have time for other stuff.
What the devil is Obama messing with Yemen? He needs to get his nose out of other countries. All of his interventions have turned to chicken doo doo.
Maybe he's trying to "Cloward-Piven" the military: over-commit, overwhelm and destroy it.
Ditto
what is going on here ?
Bump
Or International A.N.S.W.E.R. and Moveon.orgasm, for that matter.
The NYT is trying to throw Obama under the bus. Even their liberal reporters and capitalistic owners need to pay their bills.
Egypt
Libya
Afghanistan
Yemen
That's five by my count, two which he inherited, and three which he has started on his own.
Some Nobel Peace Prize winner. At some point, those surrounding this guy have to realize that they are working for a psychopath.
Updating my tagline.
Last year, historical perspective.

US Hopes to Establish Bases as Yemen Fight Escalates

But the deployment of US military advisors in a nation ahead of an eventual full scale military operation is nothing new, and while officials are still keeping their exact strategy somewhat vague it appears clear that the Obama Administration is escalating to what could only be called a war-like posture in Yemen.
Current:
Pentagon: No Proof US-Trained Troops Involved in Yemens Protest Attacks http://news.antiwar.com/2011/06/03/pentagon-no-proof-us-trained-troops-involved-in-yemens-protest-attacks/
Of course the US complicity in crackdowns by their client states has already been well documented in places like Bahrain, where US-made tanks rolled into the capital city of Manama to attack Shiite demonstrators. And of course this is also the case in Iraq, where US-created forces have engaged in a brutal, if not heavily-publicized, crackdown on protests.
We’ve actually been involved in Yemen quite some time, as well as we’re back in Somalia too. Al-queda forward operating bases.
As more of the involvements ranging from advisers to training to boots on the ground, it is becoming immanently clear 0bama is trying to destabilize the entire region.
The question becomes...what is the end game?
