BREAKING: Officials are on scene of an aircraft that landed at Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC after a bomb threat was made against the aircraft. Details are still sketchy, however, sources tell BaltimoreJewishLife.com that a K-9 unit has detected a suspicious bag on board the aircraft. The aircraft and area around it has been evacuated.

I lived in London for six years during the 1980's when the Irish Republican Army was at the height of their bombing campaign.
One of the IRA's most effective techniques was to phone in a bomb threat at, say, a large department store, and then detonate bombs in cars parked by exits when the building emptied.
This way, the goons placed the police in a serious dilemma -- do the cops pass on notifying the public and keep them confined in an area of maximum blast damage, and avoid a possible chance to escape OR do the cops send the crowds scurrying in the direction of a bomb. The police almost always chose to investigate the vehicles around the exits before sounding an alarm, which resulted in large numbers of dead and wounded police. and maximized both casualties and fear.
Every bomb scare needs to be regarded as a serious threat, immediately and thoroughly investigated, with all guilty parties punished to the full extent of the law.
It could be a trap to target first responders.
