It’s important to point out that there is a huge difference in the Texas Dream Act and the The Dream Act that was pushed in Congress and failed. The Dream Act in Congress was full of all kinds of goodies other than allowing children of illegals to receive in state tuition. The Texas Dream Act was focused only on that. I happen to agree with The Texas Dream Act, and so did everyone in the Senate in Texas. It passed with ZERO “no” votes. Add to that, it has been proven to be successful.

These are a few things you need to know about the Texas Dream Act. The child has to have lived in Texas the three years leading up to high school graduation. These students are given no special treatment in getting into Texas colleges and universities. They must get in on their own merit. They are paying the tuition (with or without financial aid). It’s estimated that these students make up about 1% of those entering college.

Most of us agree that border control MUST be dealt with first. The problem with all other efforts on this issue in the past is that the borders were not sealed. If there is anyone who we can trust to do that it is Gov. Perry (if he decides to run for President). He knows what goes on down at the border. He has gone there many times. He knows what needs to be done. There is no doubt in my mind that if he were President, he would seal our borders. But Perry also understands Hispanic outreach.

And how is that AZ immigration law working out for AZ?

Quiete well actually, the illegal invaders have been abandoning AZ for more invader-friendly states ever since its passage. No single thing is going to fix this, but to pander to racist groups like LaRaza, like Perry did when he spoke at one of their confabs, is not helpful at all.

Illegals should have to pay the same tuition as any other foreigner. Hell, I'd charge them more because we already know what a drain the illegal invaders are to our economy.

Just standing around waiting for the feds to do something about a problem that they created and encouraged isn't going to get the job done either.

Perry hasn't just been waiting around.

But let me ask you. If you were the Governor of Texas what would you do today about the border, illegal immigration, violence in TX (all border states), eduction of children, companies who hire illegals, etc.?

Please give some detailed options and how you would enforce them.

Perry’s relationship to Hispanics, the nation’s fastest-growing voting bloc, is complex, given his pro-family, anti-abortion agenda and strong anti-illegal immigration position as a Mexican border governor.

As part of his conservative social-issues credentials, he’s invited the nation’s governors to a “national day of prayer and fasting” Aug. 6 in Houston, a move that gives him a platform to court evangelicals.....”

Perry hasn't just been waiting around.

No he hasn't. Again, I'm not defending Perry, but if you read the full speech that Perry gave that was mentioned in the article you posted, he quite definitely didn't wait around, and he didn't give up easily on his dreams for the border areas.

I may bash Perry for supporting the pro-abortion Giuliani and for trying to put money into the pockets of his buddies, but Perry is incredibly compassionate and cares a lot about the people along both sides of the border, especially the poorer people that don't have good healthcare or education, and he definitely cared for the children of illegal immigrants. That is a side of Perry that most people will not see or they refuse to see. If Perry had gotten his way and had helped improve the healthcare and education of the poorer people along both sides of the border, I think the border situation might not be as bad as it is now. It's hard to say though, because the drug violence transcends the other issues down there.

Perry even acknowledged the drug problems along the border in that speech:

President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity. Clearly we have a long way to go in addressing those issues.

As much foresight as Perry has, even he didn't realize how bad things would get. Nobody could have predicted it would get as bad as it did.

Everybody should read that speech because while a lot of us don't like him, and others think he's shallow or an airhead, that speech is from the heart and it shows an awareness of the problems along the border that most politicians, especially those from non-border states, simply do not have.

It won’t only be Hispanics watching this speech closely.

I do not understand why legal citizens, even legal Hispanics, or maybe espeically legal Hispanics think it is racist or hateful to want our law obeyed.
I think Hispancs who actually think the matter through agree we can’t keep letting illegals in and taking care of them
I think others are whipped into a frenzy to believe that if anyone wants illegals stopped and sent back it means we hate all Hispanics.

Perry really tries to have it both ways but he ay be forced to take a stand if he really wants to run for pOTUS

I forgot to address this in my last post, but since I replied to you, I feel I should.

I would stop playing games and do a much better job of securing the border and pressuring the feds. If we pull out of Afghanistan, the terrorists are going to get their act together and they are going to come after us hard, and the Mexican border will be the easiest route, especially with the amount of weapons floating around down there.

Illegal immigration and companies who hire illegal immigrants, they are an issue that are closely tied together. I would work hard on drying up the jobs. While it's a popular image that many come here to get on some kind of welfare/public assistance, the fact is that many are here working and sending money back to Mexico. We can keep on arresting people and occasionally deporting them, but that's just dealing with the symptoms and not the actual disease. When you hear about big companies getting busted for having dozens or even hundreds of illegal aliens, and for the most part the company gets a fine, the system is broke. In many cases, the fines are so low that it's still a better deal for the companies to try and continue employing illegals. Look at Tyson Foods - they've been busted, and not much happened. They are still busy giving plenty of donations to politicians from both parties. There has to be a line drawn where a company can no longer do business, and its executives must face jailtime, if they go over a certain amount of illegal immigrants. It's easy for one or two to slip through the cracks, but when you start talking dozens or more, there's people within the company that know what's going on.

As for education, I would have stood up to the federal government on No Child Left Behind. NCLB is screwing up our public schools and it has given the federal government too much control. The feds should not be able to hold our education taxdollars. It was one of the worst things that George W. Bush supported. I have wished that Rick Perry would take a stand and tell the feds to get lost and let Texans handle Texas' education issue. Our schools worked fine for decades, but now we are faced with bureacrats in Washington and Austin who are dictating to small school districts how to run things.

I feel for Perry, he's only been in office for 10 years, and it's tough to get a lot accomplished in Texas politics in such a short time. Still won't support him, but I sympathize, and I feel he is one of the more compassionate and border-aware candidates out there. Palin, Bachmann, etc. do not have nearly the grasp he has on the border issues.

As a Christian, I respect Perry for wanting to improve both sides of the border and provide healthcare and education for our poorest citizens, even those here illegally, but as a Conservative, that's not where I want my tax dollars going.

I also would be concerned that any projects he pushed would be benefiting friends of his. And as a Christian, I still have problems with his supporting Rudy Giuliani during the 2008 presidential election, and I don't see me changing my mind on it. Abortion, gay marriage, gun control, those are some serious things. I'll admit that Perry does care about poor people and about illegal immigrants and their families and about improving the border, but you won't get me supporting him.

So much of the problems in the states can be directly tied to states taking Federal money (our own money “given” back with strings attached).

Perry wants states to take back their power, to govern locally, for the federal government to retract.

He would be a good man to have in the White House.

Where do we cut here in USA to spend more on Mexico.How many USA citizens do we kick to the curb so we can improve life for Mexicans?

We send between 700 million and a billionto Mexico every year.

Mexico actually ranks 14th in the WORLD on GDP so it is hardly a poor nation. That they choose to not help their own citizens is not our fault.

I would love to be able to help every single person suffering anywhere in the world. We can’t.

Giuliani also support abortion, gay marriage, and gun control-lite, and had he somehow won, he would have been able to appoint a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, and pro-gun control justice to the Supreme Court.

No I won’t...I DID read the writing and justification for compounding a mistake.

I do not agree with the sentiment.

Yes, I know these were hard working and decent people and all that. Salt of the earth etc. But squatters are still squatters.

But all of a sudden because they broke the law and continue to do so, we are now going to just let ‘em stay, reward them and even allow them one of the benefits of state citizenship: in state tuition.

Its just wrong: these people whio are here ILLEGALLY compete against our own sons and daughters maybe denyimng them a spot in state schools because they are, perhaps, not hispanic...certainly an advantage to be a minority. And IF you extend education bennies to them when will they ever go home? Why would they ever go home.

I don’t care if the know Mexico or the hellhole it has become or not. Sorry as I can be. We should not be subsidizing their lawless behavior.

Which proves my point - Obama appointed a pro-abortion, pro-gun control justice, and Perry supported a "Republican" who also would have appointed a pro-abortion, pro-gun control justice. Or maybe it's proving your point that there isn't much difference between Obama and Giuliani.

I just know that in 2008 Perry campaigned for a very despicable person who would have pushed for abortions, gay marriage, and gun control.
