Feds crack down on campus flirting and sex jokes
The Washington Examiner ^ | 06/21/11 | Michael Barone

Posted on 06/22/2011 10:40:24 AM PDT by CharlyFord

When I was growing up it was widely believed that colleges and universities were the part of our society with the widest scope for free expression and free speech. In the conformist America of the 1950s, the thinking ran, few people dared to say anything that went beyond a broad consensus. But on campus anyone could say anything he liked.

Today we live in an America with enormous cultural variety in which very few things are considered universally verboten. But on campus it's different. There saying something considerably milder than some of the double entrendres you heard in cable news coverage of the Anthony Weiner scandal can get you into big trouble.

OCR's letter carries great weight since there are few things a university president fears more than an OCR investigation, which can lead to loss of federal funds -- which amount to billions of dollars in some cases.

Now that the Feds have solved the routine problems (wars, corruption in Congress, economic collapse, etc.), they are going after the hard problems, dirty jokes on campus!

I know how they can reduce the Federal budget. Get rid of these jerks that are trying to control our lives.

Oh my G-d...does that cesspool in Washington need a clean sweep and a flush.

November 2012 is the start. We HAVE to get that grifter and his whole crew out first.

I pray every day that this happens so reason and intelligence can be restored before the shooting starts.

“What the seemingly misnamed Office of Civil Rights is doing here is demanding the setting up of kangaroo courts and the dispensing of what I would call marsupial justice against students who are disfavored by campus denizens because of their gender or race or political attitude. “Alice in Wonderland’s” Red Queen would approve.”

Holder’s people. Red, black, and green.

Congress should apply these standards to itself. I am sure that Congress is free of any sexual behavior.

University guidelines can be very loose about the definition of sexual harrassment. Jokes and general derogatory comments can be construed as harrassment. There is plenty of opportunity for abuse. With the preponderance standard, many allegations will come to battle of accuser and accused.

Student-student harrassment can be difficult to untangle. Some opportunistic individuals may jump on the harrassment bandwagon to shake down a university.

The Statists pay themselves handsomely for life making up silly rules to hurt and hinder business. There are thousands of useless bureaucrats in CA who have fees, regulations and programs that have literally no real value, other than creating make-work jobs that drive the economy into the crapper.

They are now suing the rail companies to say diesel exhaust is a pollutant, so we have no way to transport goods.

In the end, there will be conflict and it will not be pretty.

National Lampoon Magazine covers from the early 70's

George Carlin: "Censorship from the right is to be expected. Censorship from the left took me by surprise. And I’m talking, of course, about what originated as campus speech codes at eastern universities and has come to be called politically correct language. The impulse behind political correctness is a good one, but like most things America falls in love with, it has become grotesquely distorted beyond its usefulness." Source

Exactly my thought when I read this. Anyone wanting to predict the next moves the admin will make need only read 1984 - The handbook of today’s Democratic Party.

WTF ! Free speech is squelched in the name of P.C. but yet now, sexual activity between students now fall under federal micromanagement and sanctions ! I would hate to be a college student today !

I remember back in 1987, the president of the university I attended issued a Sexual Harassment decree which even applied to student to student relationships. It as modified specifically to apply to a fraternity who hired strippers for rush parties each year.

Th gov’t is going beyond what they were given permission to do - protect our individual rights, not usurp them !

It has already migrated to the business sector. I was in a training session for an accounting database. On the part of setting up the account login, I had inquired if strong passwords were required (some locations have such required by their IT departments). I take it that most on this board are familiar with such a practice that is part of network security requirements. I was told that no swear words were allowed as passwords, then she reported me to the HR department.
So unknowingly exposing a person’s (of protected class) ignorance on a subject is also considered creating a “hostile workplace environment”. I did not ridicule the person, merely asked a question where she simply did not know the subject matter.

So with this proposal from the Zero administration, it will codify P.C. on campus where they will have these Star Chamber’s or Show J-Boards operating even on campuses that stayed out of the P.C. fray.

One thing I want to remark is George Carlin gets right to the point and is shame that he is now gone. I know he would a lot of thing to say about what is going on today !

Next they will be taxing students on how much toilet paper they use. They will start with a penny a sheet, and if toilet paper useage goes up, they will add another penny.

I had to add a little toilet humor here, now that it will soon be unlawfull.

Sounds like the idiots offended to the core of their PC being by the terms, master drive and slave drive.

If it weren’t for affirmative action they couldn’t make a living.

I work in the “higher education” setting and free speech is the last thing to be expected in a modern college setting. If it isn’t PC it better not be stated or written or you will suffer the consequences. And in most, not all, but most cases you will spout the BS political lines of the instructors or suffer their wrath on your grades.
The only ideas you are allowed to be exposed to in academia are pure liberalism all others are verboten.

In my position I encounter students who at times are deeply troubled by the political indoctrination they encounter in their classes and don’t know what to do as many are freshman. In many cases I have to point out these instructors have never had a real job in the real world so don’t take their point of view as gospel. I also point out you have to decide on your course of action. You need to size up the professor and see if they will hold it against you for daring to question them in the classroom. If you think he or she will give you a fair shake stand your ground with logic and common sense.

If they don’t think they can get a fair shake then two options I suggest, drop the class or hold your nose spout their liberal BS back to them, take the grade and remember, always remember what you had to do to placate so-called open minded and tolerant liberalism.

What is sad is trying to point this out to a liberal professor, they will have no part of it. They claim open mindedness and tolerance of all opinions in the classroom. Yet when you cite examples they dismiss those claims as not accurate or lies. Total obliviousness to their closed mindedness.
