How anything you've EVER said on the internet could be seen by employers

The Federal Trade Commission has approved a controversial firm which scours social media sites to check on job applicants.

It means anything you've ever said in public on sites including Facebook, Twitter and even Craigslist could be seen by your would-be employer.

The Washington-based commission has ruled the firm, Social Intelligence Corporation, complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act - even though it keeps the results of its searches on file for seven years.

I love your boss too.

Frankly, I would never work for any company that employed this company to do background checks. In fact, any company that is large enough to have an HR department is large enough to make your life miserable (diversity/sensativity training anyone?).

Screw em. I’ll work at my locally owned fast food joint selling burgers before I’ll work at Giant Corp, inc.

Every utterance you make on the internet is copyrighted and you own the copyright. All you need to do is assert your right.

This company is reading AND copying your material and using it in a commercial transaction with a third party.

Seems to me a simple matter to sue them for violation of copyright.

Bet these guys kind of wondered why NO ONE ELSE had done this!

Big companies are simply extensions of the government.

More reason to work for yourself —THAT way you really CAN love your boss (cuz it will be YOU).

You bring up a good point. Does a company have to disclose that they are using this investigative service?

If they can match names with screen names, it could be very troublesome. Of course, matching actual name with other names can be a problem too. I have the same first and last names as sex offenders in Oklahoma and Alabama (different middle names, though). You can bet I abide the speed limit if I drive in either state.

Not Freerepublic. I have a top secret clearance and, frankly, would appear to be a Tom Clancy novel character if anyone knew who I really was. But I always use free wi-fi and a special computer that I never use for anything else.

Good luck with that one, fellas.

I’ve started to use Facebook to look up possible hires. I’ve screened out a lot showing very freakish behavior and have hired those who seem to be well balanced. It’s definitely kept me from doing some bad hires. Anyone can put on a show for an interview.
