Politico ^ | 6/27/2011 | By MAGGIE HABERMAN

Via POLITICO's Jennifer Epstein, Michele Bachmann isn't accepting an apology from Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace for asking her yesterday, "Are you a flake?" Continue Reading

ABC News' Jon Karl, who's been getting face-time with Bachmann in Waterloo in advance of her formal campaign announcement, played a clip of the web video in which Wallace said, "I messed up. I'm sorry."

When Karl asked if she accepts the apology, Bachmann brushed aside the question this way: "I think that it's insulting to insinuate that a candidate for president is less than serious."

She should have taken off the microphone, tossed it on the desk, and walked out without saying a word. If she said anything, it will be used as an out-of-context sound bite.

Refuse any further interviews with Fox until - not Chris - but the head of Fox news apologies, on air, for the insult.

The media cannot survive without advertisers, and interviews.

>>Instead, her refusal to accept the apology shows that she’s thin-skinned. The failure to be gracious in the face of an apology is, well, ungracious<<

Unless an apology comes to me, I don’t accept it.
Going on tv and including her in his Mea Culpa wasn’t an apology.

“He said that was the rap on her from OTHER people and he asked her straight out.”

The “OTHER people” approach to questioning is cowardly and allows the questioner to ask/imply that there’s something there. The best way to handle that approach is easy, simple and cuts it off at the knees. She should have looked Wallace in the eye and said, “Who, Chris? I want names.” If Wallace doesn’t provide them, case closed. If he does, the names will indicate an agenda on the part of the name caller. Easy.

Don’t accept the premise that the media provides. Challenge them at every opportunity.

Maybe she IS a flake...

Maybe Pelosi is a flake. Did Wallace ask her if she's a flake?

According to freedictionary.com, a flake is a somewhat eccentric person; an oddball.

I get what you are saying, but you are missing the point that the objective reporter is sounding more like same ole, same ole media.

Wallace apologized. It may not have salvaged his career, but it was a good move on his part. Bachmann didn't accept his apology which IMHO is going to kill her career.

She professes to be a Christian. Christians are commanded to forgive and continue to forgive. By refusing to forgive she is being petty.

And then to use the excuse for not forgiving is that she was insulted because Wallace implied that she was not a serious candidate is they height of hypocrisy after she used Rollins to make the same allegations against Palin. Bachmann has never publicly apologized for that stupid remark. Instead she used an intermediary to leak a story that she took Rollins to the woodshed.

Frankly, I was excited about Bachmann as a candidate because I thought she was another Sarah Palin. Unfortunately she's not in the same league with Sarah Palin.

Here we are just a couple of weeks into her candidacy and she's already shot herself in the foot at least two times. If she keeps this up, her congressional seat is going to be at risk.

>>Wallace ASKED if Bachmann is a flake.

He did not even call her a flake.<<

*snicker*

Are you a child molester?

Come on, it was a gotcha question with no answer. It was inappropriate. We only ask what we think could be true.

Do you think that he would ask if she was African? No, because it’s obvious she isn’t. He asked if she was a flake because HE sees it as a legit question.

RE :”FNC has been doing a number on Sarah Palin for quite awhile. The have said, with certainty, that she is not running (when they really don't know). Karl Rove, BOR, Hayes, Krauthammer, Morris, Hume, Perino, Kristol, et al, have poo-pooed a Palin run for many months now and have been very dismissive of her.

#1 : She is NOT a candidate. She has made that choice, not FNC, not PDSers.
#2: They might very well know. She still works for FNC. Just brecause you dont know doesnt mean that they dont know

You want them to talk about Palin’s candidacy (that doesnt exist now) ?? Talk to her about it. Only she can make the decision to become a candidate.

When they (FNC) call her a 'flake' ping me and I will take the accusation seriously.

I would love to see any of our dumb-cluck political reporters interview Cartman. "So, Eric: tell us why you think there are too many minorities in your waterpark..." LOL.

But back to the real-world - Mitt Romney is going to be in my office in about an hour. Any questions you'd like me to ask him?? (Try to keep it civil, now... ;- ) I plan to ask him if he thinks ObamaCare is Constitutional and if not, why not?

Why not take the opportunity to show people you are big enough to accept it?

Okay, once again. Politico's title is misleading/wrong/etc. Wallace said this:

"A lot of YOU were more than perturbed, YOU were upset and felt that I had been rude to her. And since in the end it's really all about the answers and not about the questions. I messed up. I'm sorry. I didn't mean any disrespect."

He's apologiziing to his VIEWERS, not Bachmann. Regardless, she brushes off the question and says:
"Those are the small issues. I'm focused on the big ones."

That is a perfectly acceptable answer from a serious candidate. (IMO, of course)

FLAKE:

A person who you cannot trust to remember things, or to do what they say they will do, or someone who behaves in a strange way...

It's hard to tell at this point whether it'll sink her candidacy, but her not accepting the apology was a fumble on her part.

She seems to have a knack for doing that.

In the interview her answer was defensive and she dodged the question. This would have been a great time for her to turn it around and instead of getting defensive to just go on the attack and ask the interviewer if he had ever asked a question like that to any democrat or to Obama.

I didn't think her answer was good. I understand that the question was completely out of line, but if she knew Sarah Palin's history she would have known this was coming before going into the pit with Wallace or any TV reporter.

Now to refuse to accept an apology is just wrong. It makes her appear petty and vindictive.

"you were wrong about Christie"

When I saw that on utube I was jumping up and down shouting "YES!" Christie's handling of that hack was perfect! I've liked Christie from day one, but now I like him even more. He is almost up there with Sarah in my book.

I agree entirely. I saw her as a logical alternative to Palin. But she has shown herself to be completely unprepared for a presidential run. Heck, look at her complete denial that she and her husband had received cash from their father-in-law's farm - when her very own Congressional disclosure filings indicate otherwise. In such an instance, and knowing the story was in play, she should have had a complete explanation of the matter. A blanket denial with no explanation puts her in the position of contradicting her own official paperwork. Never a good thing.

But try telling her supporters that Bachmann is doing a really bad job out of the gate. They adhere to the same approach that Bachmann is following - pretend there is no problem. It's not hard to guess how well that approach will play out over time.

The problem is the way Wallace phrased it.

You nailed it, and I think Wallace realized it after he'd said it. It's the reason he interrupted her with the clarification. It was obvious from the start of the question, when he had to rephrase, that he wasn't doing a good job putting what he wanted to ask into words.

He never apologized to her to her face, but only on air. I would only consider accepting an apology if the apology was made to my face, in the same way the insult was made.

Agreed, it is also not smart to make the "flake" question an issue.

Funny, Bachmann never required Ed Rollins to make an apology to Palin in public.
