Why Herman Cain could be the GOP's perfect Obama rival
Yahoo/Christian Science Monitor ^ | Jul 5, 2011 | Charlton McIlwain

Herman Cain defies the stereotype of blacks as liberal. And his embrace of conservatism and rugged individualism might make him the Republicans' best salesman – and counter to Obama.

Black candidates must be especially image savvy to navigate the delicate contours of today’s racial politics. They must cultivate racial appeal, without provoking racial resentment, and expend their racial capital, without succumbing to the litany of stereotypes whites associate with them.

We thought Barack Obama mastered this art, believing future black candidates must learn at his feet. But Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain might prove more teacher than apprentice.

My co-author, Stephen Caliendo, and I analyzed over a thousand ads researching our recent book about racial appeals in US elections.

We always returned to Mr. Cain’s 2004 Senate ads. Two aspects of those ads demonstrate why Cain might be the Republican’s best salesman and contrast to his fellow black rival.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that IF he does get the nomination, he performs better vs. Obama than any other contender.

Which is the way those that really like Herman, but are still sitting on the fence, need to focus. We need the entry with the best odds, not the prettiest horse or the one with the most racing experience.

Andrew Klavan: Why do Blacks vote for democrats

The "reason" that he comes up with is hillarious.

I’m sorry, Herman Cain seems like a nice enough guy but I think his candidacy is mainly driven by a cynical political calculation that he gives the Republicans an advantage by defusing the race issue with the Democrats.

I don’t support this kind of game playing, and I don’t think its a road we really want to be going down. They will just say he is not a “real” black person.

Pinging the Cain Train!

In other HC news today:

From Herman Cain’s facebook page:
Today is “Ask Obama” day on Twitter, where you can ask the President a question by using the hash-tag #AskObama. I submitted a question of my own:
As a mathematician, I’ve got to ask: exactly how did you come up with the jobs “created or saved” number, again?

Sadly, the majority of naysayers have never read his background, listened to his speeches, listened to his radio show, read his books or even know where he stands on issues.

Well, it would be interesting if Barry Soetoro came all the way from Indonesia only to get Cain’d here.

Winner!

Interestingly, you have noticed that Herman is likeable and black. Those that are on fire for him have listened to what he has to say.

You don't like game-playing, yet you still don't know if your candidate is running, and you're thrilled when she plays cat and mouse with the media....a move that entertains and frustrates, but is it productive?

Your heart belongs to Sarah? Our country cannot afford primary results based on the affections of a candidate's supporters.

As long as the GOP nominee does not blow bubbles with his/her drool, he/she will win and it won't be close.

“Almost no blacks would vote for Cain, as they are pre-committed to all Democrat nominees for all offices at all times.”

I disagree. There was another article on FR today about how blacks are now the most religious group in America. Cain is a preacher, I believe, & would draw a lot of that vote. And another story I heard the other day: a man (white) was standing at a copier at his office. A television set was on with Obama going on about something. A black woman who worked in the office happened to come by at that moment & said, “I am getting so tired of that man’s voice!” The fellow was so shocked he couldn’t think of anything to say.

Sounds like even blacks are not happy with O.

I believe that I said I don’t like this KIND of game playing.

I have listened to what Herman has to say and think he is a smart guy without any political experience.

If Palin will not run I would support Bachman. And affection is every bit as valid as being “on fire” for someone. Little difference really.
